The Second Medical Unit of the Second Advance Detachment of the Henan–Shaanxi Anti-Japanese Column

The Second Medical Unit of the Second Advance Detachment of the Henan–Shaanxi Anti-Japanese Column is a classic red tourism site and a patriotic education base.

The Second Medical Unit of the Second Advance Detachment of the Henan–Shaanxi Anti-Japanese Column is located in Sanfen Village within the Huan’cuiyu Scenic Area of Xingyang City (i.e., Sanfen Village under Wolongtai in Miaozhi Township, south of the county), surrounded by mountains, with beautiful mountains and clear waters. In November 1944, the Second Medical Unit was established in Sanfen Village. The unit had fifty to sixty members and was equipped with an operating room, a pharmacy, and patient wards, along with 25 thatched huts and five cave dwellings, capable of accommodating dozens of wounded and sick soldiers. At the northeast corner of Sanfen Village, beneath the southern cliff of Wolongtai, there are three cave dwellings— one on the eastern side measuring 15.2 meters deep and 4 meters wide. The cliff above is covered with lush tung tree foliage. This particular cave dwelling served as a ward for severely wounded soldiers and became known as the “Heroes’ Cave.” Commander Pi Dingjun personally visited here to comfort the injured and sick soldiers. In 1945, the unit moved southward with the army. In June 1996, the Second Medical Unit was designated as a Zhengzhou Municipal Patriotic Education Base by the Zhengzhou Municipal Youth League Committee. To better protect this historical site, local villagers have hung a sign reading “Eighth Route Army Rear Hospital” for publicity and educational purposes.
