Mount Tai Shi

Mount Tai Shi, located to the north of Dengfeng City in Henan Province, is the eastern peak of Songshan Mountain. It consists of thirty-six peaks, with the main peak, Junji Peak, rising 1,440 meters above sea level.

Songshan Mountain is made up of two peaks, Tai Shi and Shao Shi. Mount Tai Shi is the eastern peak of Songshan. It is said that Yu the Great’s first wife, Tushan-shi, gave birth to Qi here, and a temple to Qi’s mother, Qimu Temple, was built at the foot of the mountain, which is why it is called “Tai Shi.”

Among the seventy-two peaks of the Songshan scenic area, Mount Tai Shi accounts for half. Its main peak is named Junji Peak, a name derived from the line “lofty as the heavens” in the “Odes of Song” section of the Book of Songs. Later, during the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Qianlong composed a poem and erected a stele here during his visit to Songshan, leading to the peak also being called “Imperial Stele Peak.” The rocky cliffs of Mount Tai Shi are lush and emerald, with peaks clustered together like the petals of a lotus flower. From the summit of Junji Peak, you can see Shao Shi Mountain to the west, Jishan Mountain to the south, the Ying River flowing in front, and the Yellow River stretching like a ribbon to the north, offering a truly breathtaking view that makes you feel as though all other mountains are small.

Special Tips

It takes about three hours to hike from the mountain’s base to the main peak, Junji Peak. There are no retail shops along the way, so be sure to bring enough food and water.
