Hall of Manjushri

• The Hall of Manjushri enshrines the Bodhisattva Manjushri, whose name means “Gentle Glory” or “Wonderful Virtue.” He is one of the Four Great Bodhisattvas, alongside Guanyin, Samantabhadra, and Ksitigarbha.

Introduction

The Hall of Manjushri is located to the east of the Lixue Pavilion, facing west, and stands opposite the Hall of Samantabhadra. It houses the statue of the Bodhisattva Manjushri, who is depicted riding a blue lion, with two young attendants sculpted on either side. Inside the hall, near the northern wall, a glass display case contains the “Shadow Stone of Bodhidharma Meditating Facing the Wall,” about three feet high, smooth as an egg, and a later engraved replica. A cast iron cloud-shaped plaque hangs under the eaves outside the hall and serves as a tool for temple meals and worship.
