The Han Three Recesses

The Han Three Recesses, namely the Taishi, Shaoshi, and Qimu Recesses, are among the very few surviving Han Dynasty structures in China today. A "recess" refers to a pair of symmetrical buildings constructed in front of city gates, tomb gates, palace gates, or temple gates. The Han Three Recesses are the oldest surviving national-level ritual architecture relics in China and serve as precious materials for researching architectural history, art history, and the social history of the Eastern Han Dynasty.
