Luotou Site in Luoning

The Luotou Site in Luoning is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

There are over 20 Yangshao and Longshan cultural sites in Luoning, mainly distributed along both sides of the Luo River in various townships (towns). In addition, they can also be found in townships such as Hedi, Dongsong, and Xiayu. Among the most famous are the Ludi Site, Xiwangcun Site, Tangpo Site, Luotou Site, Gucun Site, and Zhaizi Site, all of which are provincial-level key cultural relic protection units. The largest site covers an area of 200,000 square meters, with cultural strata generally ranging from 1 to 3 meters in thickness. Over the years, archaeologists and scholars have conducted multiple surveys and excavations at these sites. Excavated pottery items include tripods, jars, li tripods, plates, clarifiers, small pointed-bottom bottles, red pottery bowls, painted pottery basins, high-necked jars, three-legged vessels, pottery spinning whorls, and pottery rings. The materials consist of coarse clay pottery, fine red clay pottery, polished black pottery, sand-mixed coarse and fine red clay pottery, gray pottery, and clay pottery. Decorative patterns feature basketry patterns, grid patterns, fine cord marks, coarse cord marks, appliqué patterns, and painted designs. Stone tools include knives, axes, shovels, sickles, and scrapers. These pottery and stone artifacts exhibit distinct characteristics of the Yangshao and Longshan cultures. Many pottery items and fragments are extremely rare and hold significant research and cultural value.
