Luo Chu Shu Stele

The Luo Chu Shu Stele is a protected cultural relic of Henan Province.

"Luo Chu Shu" is located in Changshui Town, 20 kilometers west of Luoning County, Henan Province, at the junction where the Luo River—the largest tributary of the Yellow River—flows out of the gorges and into the plains. This is the birthplace of the Luo Shu, the origin of Heluo culture. The site now features two surviving steles that mark the Luo Shu: one from the Han-Wei period and another from the second year of the Yongzheng reign in the Qing Dynasty, both inscribed with the four large characters “Luo Chu Shu.” These steles are situated precisely at the boundary between the upper and lower reaches of the Luo River. The upstream area is mostly rugged mountains and deep valleys, while the downstream is a vast plain—a cradle for ancient human habitation. To its west lies Longtou Mountain, atop which are ancient relics such as the Yu the Great Temple, the Luohe Dragon God Temple, and the Luo Shu Bestowed Upon Yu Stele. To its north is Longtou Mountain, with the ruins of Zigai Temple and the tomb of Geng Yu, a Ming Dynasty Minister of Personnel, located to the south of the mountain. To its south lies the Luo River, facing cliff inscriptions that read “Yue Wumu’s Army Marched Here” and the ruins of Yue Wumu’s Camp. Nearby is the “Cangjie Writing Platform,” and to the west is the “Turtle Carrying the Book Site” of the Xuanhu River. To this day, cliff engravings remain, including a poem inscribed by Liu Wuchen, a Jinshi scholar from Guangdong, originating from Western Shu. The stele site is surrounded by thousands of acres of light bamboo groves.
