Shengfang Wang Family Courtyard

The Shengfang Wang Family Courtyard is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

Wang Family Courtyard

The Wang Family Courtyard is located within Bazhou, and was originally built in 1880 (the sixth year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty). The original owner was Wang Zijian. Both the design and construction were commissioned from Tianjin. It is said that the construction cost thirty thousand taels of silver.

The residence was originally divided into four smaller courtyards: the northeast courtyard featured European-style architecture; the southeast courtyard exhibited an African architectural style; the northwest courtyard featured traditional Chinese Qing-style architecture; the southwest courtyard served as the front yard before entering the main gate. The main gate had European-style doors and windows, surrounded by corridors on all four sides, and three gates of distinct styles. The main gate was a grand tiger-seat gate tower, with finely carved brick reliefs on the lintel, totaling three panels — the middle one depicting the White Pagoda Temple in Beijing, the left one showing Broadway in Shanghai, and the right one featuring the Wall River in Tianjin. In 1958, faculty and students from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts visited and studied the site. The main gate tower was over 4 meters wide and more than 5 meters high. After the Tangshan earthquake, the southwest and southeast courtyards, along with the main gate, second gate, and third gate, were demolished. Currently, the two courtyards on the north side, as well as the northwest and northeast courtyards, are largely intact.
