Shengfang Dabei Zen Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Shengfang Dabei Zen Temple is located in Shengfang Town, Dongshi District, Bazhou City, Hebei Province. It was entirely rebuilt in 2008 and stands as one of the thirteen major cultural landmark buildings in Bazhou City, as well as one of the important scenic spots planned for promotion around the Beijing-Tianjin area. With a history spanning over 2,500 years, Shengfang has long been a place where multiple religions have flourished. Historically, there was a saying of “three temples, two nunneries, and eighteen shrines.” According to local lore, at its peak, the small town of Shengfang was home to as many as 72 various temples, which speaks volumes about the vast number of worshippers in those days.

As one of the three major temples of Shengfang, Shengfang Dabei Zen Temple, formerly known as the North Temple, was first built in the late Yuan Dynasty, reconstructed in the first year of the Ming TianShun era, and renovated in the fifth year of the Zhengde era. Over more than 600 years, it reached its heyday during the Qing Dynasty before being destroyed by natural disasters and wars. During the 2008 restoration of the ancient town of Shengfang, Dabei Zen Temple was completely rebuilt. The temple complex spans a planned area of 80,000 square meters, with a total investment of 200 million yuan, including a built-up area of 28,000 square meters, featuring 23 halls, buildings, and pavilions of varying sizes. These structures are laid out in an impressive array, majestic in appearance, with some built from blue bricks and grey tiles, and others adorned with carved beams and painted rafters. The grand halls shine brilliantly, reflecting one another, while wind chimes tinkle softly under the eaves, and Buddhist chants harmonize with the surroundings, blending seamlessly with the adjacent landscape. The sheltered corridor in a square-loop shape, thousand-year-old trees, rare flowers and plants, and footbridges all contribute to an otherworldly atmosphere for visitors, evoking deep reflection and wonder.

The reconstructed Dabei Zen Temple, with its comprehensive array of halls, solemn statues, and unique layout, has become one of China’s four major Guanyin pilgrimage sites, standing alongside Mount Potalaka, Nanshan Temple in Hainan, and the Potala Palace in Tibet.
