The Rong Gaotang Memorial Hall serves as a patriotic education base.

The Rong Gaotang Memorial Hall is located on the east side of West Ring Road, north of Huanghe Road, and south of Longjiang Road in Bazhou City, situated along the central axis of the city’s sports center. Covering a land area of 39,220 square meters, it has a building area of 6,338 square meters and an exhibition space of 5,000 square meters.

The main structure of the memorial hall is a cylinder-shaped building with a wider base that narrows upward, resembling a “base,” symbolizing Mr. Rong Gaotang’s pivotal role as a “founding figure” in the development of sports in New China.

The exterior walls of the memorial primarily consist of solid surfaces with windowed sections. The designs transform various historical sporting events from different periods of China into simple, vivid shapes, fully showcasing the development, growth, and glory of Chinese sports.

The “flag” design solidified atop the “base” and the five-pointed star patterns engraved at its tip symbolize Rong Gaotang’s lifelong loyalty—as an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China—to the nation’s sports endeavors. They reflect his dedication, determination, and courage to strive for national strength and establish China’s presence among the world’s leading sports nations. These elements vividly illustrate his innovative efforts and remarkable journey in advancing the nation’s sports, as well as his sincere and hardworking spirit.

Once completed, the overall architecture harmonizes with the sports center, further highlighting the noble spirit of “higher, faster, stronger” that humanity pursues in sports.

The completed Rong Gaotang Memorial Hall is not only a place for people to pay tribute and learn about the revival of national sports in New China and the dream of becoming a global sports power, but also serves as a significant venue for patriotic education. With its rich ideological content, unique exhibition design, and trendsetting approach, it will become another landmark and grand sports exhibition hall in Bazhou.

The Life of Rong Gaotang

Rong Gaotang, also known as Qianxiang, was born in May 1912 in Si Street, Tang’erli Town, Bazhou City, Hebei Province. He was a member of the Communist Party of China and one of the outstanding leaders in the history of sports development in New China.

During his middle school years, he developed aspirations to devote himself to revolution and concern for the world under the influence of democratic and progressive ideas. In 1932, he was admitted to the Department of Foreign Languages at Tsinghua University and joined the Communist Party of China the following year. He became a “leader” of the student movement during the “1.29” Movement.

From 1939 to 1949, he held various positions including Party Branch Secretary of the Central Organization Department’s Inspection Team to Southern Shanxi, Committee Member of the Youth Commission of the CPC Central Committee’s Southern Bureau, Secretary and Minister of Propaganda of the Youth Commission of the East Sichuan Special Committee, Secretary of the Sichuan-Kangding Special Committee and Secretary of the Organization Department of the Southern Bureau, Deputy Director of the Administrative Office of the Beiping Military Mediation Executive Headquarters, Committee Member of the Central Youth Commission, Committee Member of the Urban Work Committee of the North China Bureau, Educational Director of the Central Youth School, Deputy Director of the Military Control Sub-commission of Western Suburbs of Beiping, Secretary of the Beijing Youth Commission, Secretary-General of the Communist Youth League Central Committee, and Committee Member of the Secretariat.

From 1949 to 1981, he served as Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the All-China Sports Federation, Secretary-General, Deputy Director, Deputy Party Group Secretary, and Second Party Committee Secretary of the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission, as well as Consultant to the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission.

After 1982, he held positions such as Secretary-General and Committee Member of the Central Advisory Commission, and Standing Committee Member of the Sixth National People’s Congress. He was elected as a member of the First National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Standing Committee Member of the Fifth National Committee, and Representative of the First, Second, and Third National People’s Congresses, as well as delegate to the 8th, 9th, and 12th National Congresses of the Communist Party of China.

In China’s sports industry, Elder Rong achieved countless “firsts”:

In 1952, he led the first delegation from New China to participate in the Olympic Games abroad, where the Five-Star Red Flag of China flew for the first time; in the same year, he was the first to propose the establishment of the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission, becoming the first Secretary-General of the Preparatory Committee of the All-China Sports Federation.

In 1965, he led a delegation to Yugoslavia to participate in the 28th World Table Tennis Championships, where the women’s team won its first world championship, marking the beginning of table tennis as China’s “national sport.”

In 1983, Juan Antonio Samaranch personally awarded him the Olympic Silver Order, making him the first person in Chinese history to receive such an Olympic honor.

In 1985, when the China Golf Association was established in Beijing, Rong Gaotang served as its first chairman.

During the pioneering years of China’s sports industry, Comrade Rong Gaotang, with the vision and courage of a trailblazer, worked alongside his colleagues in the sports field to achieve major accomplishments in areas such as competitive sports, mass sports, sports education, sports science research, team development, and venue construction—laying a solid foundation for the development of sports in China.

Under the slogan of “Keeping the motherland in our hearts and our eyes on the world” and “Uniting and striving for the glory of the nation,” the wave of patriotic fervor and collective heroism that surged through the sports community—and throughout China—became a source of inspiration and a fine tradition for generations of Chinese people striving forward with determination.

In international sports exchanges, he consistently and faithfully implemented the diplomatic policies of the Party and the state, actively promoting and expanding friendly interactions worldwide. His efforts helped China’s sports and the nation gain their rightful place on the global stage, making outstanding contributions.

Rong Gaotang possessed diverse talents and skills. Even in retirement, he continued to work tirelessly for China’s social welfare initiatives. He held key roles such as Chairman of the Chinese Contract Bridge Association, Chairman of the Chinese Golf Association, Vice Chairman of the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, and Vice Chairman of the China Children and Teenagers’ Fund. He also served as Chief Advisor to the China Film Foundation and held positions in the China Beijing Opera Art Foundation and the Disabled Persons’ Foundation. With great passion and extensive knowledge and talent, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to the advancement of sports, culture, education, youth, and the disabled community in China until his last breath.
