The Ancient City of Qingyang

The Ancient City of Qingyang is a cultural heritage site protected by Henan Province.

The Ancient City of Qingyang is located around the villages of Fan Gucheng, Ye Gucheng, and Wang Gucheng, east of Yanglou Township, approximately 9 kilometers west of Ruzhou City. It sits on the second terrace between the southern bank of the Ru River and the Lugou River. The city site is rectangular, measuring 2,600 meters from east to west and 1,300 meters from north to south, covering a total area of 3.38 million square meters. The existing city walls remain on the eastern, southern, and western sides, while the northern wall may have been washed away by the Ru River. The city walls are 34 meters wide, and the eastern and western moats are 20 meters wide. The Ru River and Lugou River serve as natural barriers to the north and south. The central northern part of the city contains a raised highland. In the western part of the city, an iron-smelting site has been discovered, covering an area of 5,000 square meters. Remains found include slag, furnace ash, and layers of ash 1.5 meters thick, as well as artifacts such as iron awls, balls, and spears. These artifacts indicate that the site was in use during the same period as the city. The city was initially built during the Warring States period and continued to be used during the Han Dynasty.

Legend has it that this was the temporary palace of King Nan of Zhou during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. After the fall of the Eastern Zhou, King Nan fled here from Luoyang and named it Qingyang City. Historical records mention King Nan “residing in Qingyang,” which aligns with this legend. The ancient city site of Qingyang is largely well-preserved and holds significant value for studying the urban planning, layout, and iron-smelting techniques of the late Eastern Zhou period. It was designated as a key cultural heritage site of Henan Province in 1999.

Yanglou Town: Yanglou Township is located in the southwestern part of Henan Province, within the territory of Pingdingshan. To the south lies the Funiu Mountain range, and to the north is the banks of the Ru River. It borders Wangzhai Township to the east and connects with Ruyang County of Luoyang City to the west. The township comprises 41 administrative villages, 108 natural villages, with a population of 74,219 and over 28,000 households. Nine of its administrative villages are situated in the Funiu Mountains, and ten are located along the Ru River. The total area of the township is 109.1 square kilometers.
