The Yuzhou Jun Official Kiln Site Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national key cultural relics protection unit.

The Jun Official Kiln Site Museum is located on the northern section of East Ring Road in Yuzhou City, Xuchang, Henan Province. It is a specialized museum dedicated to showcasing Jun porcelain culture.

The Yuzhou Jun Official Kiln Site Museum was invested and built by the Yuzhou Municipal Committee and Municipal Government in 2008. Designed under the direction of Professor Qi Kang, a renowned architectural master and academician of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, it is based on the national key cultural relic protection unit—the Northern Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln site. The museum combines site preservation, cultural relic displays, technological research, academic exchanges, Jun porcelain production, and public education. Covering an area of 47,000 square meters with a building area of 15,000 square meters and exhibition halls spanning 4,980 square meters, it is a prime example of the organic integration of traditional and modern architectural styles and is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Yuzhou Jun Official Kiln Site Museum consists of three parts: the main exhibition hall, the Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln Site Exhibition Hall, and the Jun Porcelain Engineering Technology Research and Development Center. The main exhibition hall has a building area of 11,000 square meters and is divided into six exhibition areas: "The Land of Yu," which showcases the long history and splendid culture of Yuzhou; "A Millennium in the Fire," which traces the history of ceramic development in Yuzhou and highlights the main characteristics of China's porcelain-making during the Song and Yuan dynasties when Jun kilns emerged and rapidly developed; "Imperial Jun Ware," which displays the features of Jun official kiln artifacts from the Song Dynasty and their status and broad cultural influence in the history of Chinese ceramics and arts and crafts; "The Way of Craftsmanship," which illustrates the geographical environment, natural resources, cultural background, and various advanced production techniques behind the creation of Song Dynasty Jun official kiln artifacts; "Eternal Brilliance of Colors," which showcases the glorious achievements of modern Jun porcelain development and knowledge about appreciating Jun porcelain; and "Literary Gathering," a temporary exhibition space.

The Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln Site Exhibition Hall primarily displays a complete set of ancient ceramic workshops from the official Jun porcelain kilns of the Song Dynasty. Discovered in 1964, the site underwent major excavations in 1974 and was designated as a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council in 1988. It serves as vital physical evidence for studying the culture, art, and craftsmanship of Song Dynasty Jun porcelain. The Jun Porcelain Engineering Technology Research and Development Center, with a building area of 2,400 square meters, was recognized by the Henan Provincial Department of Science and Technology in 2009 as the "Henan Artistic and Practical Jun Porcelain Engineering Technology Research and Development Center" and designated by the Henan Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology in 2010 as a "Henan Small Enterprises Public Service Demonstration Platform." It offers functions such as result transformation, production technique displays, and ancient ceramic research. It stands at the forefront of Jun porcelain engineering technology R&D, cultural studies, and craftsmanship inheritance, making it an ideal place for visitors to learn about Jun porcelain production techniques, participate in hands-on experiences, and study ancient ceramic knowledge.

As the only national-level specialized Jun porcelain museum, a window for promoting Jun porcelain culture, and a platform for Yuzhou’s international cultural exchanges, the Yuzhou Jun Official Kiln Site Museum will continue to keep pace with the times, innovate, and collaborate with all sectors of society to create a bright future for Jun porcelain through its exquisite exhibits, elegant environment, and unique charm.

Jun kilns originated in the Tang Dynasty, flourished in the Song Dynasty, and formed a vast Jun kiln system in northern China during the Jin and Yuan dynasties, influencing kilns across present-day Henan as well as provinces such as Hebei, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia. During the Northern Song Dynasty under Emperor Huizong, the Yuzhou Jun Kiln was monopolized by the imperial court as an official kiln, producing ware without regard to cost. Jun official kiln porcelain features delicate and solid body material, elegant and classic shapes with an ancient simplicity, and lustrous glazes in vibrant colors, particularly notable for its diverse kiln transformation effects unmatched by other kilns. The Song Dynasty Jun kilns were the first to use copper oxide as a coloring agent, creatively producing copper red glaze and achieving breathtaking kiln transformation colors. This innovation broke the historical pattern of single-color glazes and greatly enriched the decorative effects of ceramic art, holding extremely significant importance in the history of Chinese ceramic arts and crafts.

The China Yuzhou Jun Official Kiln Site Museum is a site-based Jun porcelain specialized museum established within the protected area of the national key cultural relic protection unit—the Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln site—centered around the Northern Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln site. The Northern Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln was an official kiln specifically dedicated to producing imperial ware for the royal family during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty (1101–1125), representing a magnificent treasure trove of Jun porcelain art at its peak. With a history of over 900 years, the Jun Official Kiln site was discovered in 1964, excavated and preserved in 1974, and designated as a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council in 1988.

In 1991, the Yuzhou Municipal Committee and Municipal Government established the "China Yuzhou Jun Official Kiln Site Museum" and the "Yuzhou Jun Porcelain Research Institute" within the protected area of the Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln site. In 2008, the municipal government expanded the Yuzhou Jun Official Kiln Site Museum. The expanded museum covers a total area of 47,000 square meters and consists of three parts: the main exhibition hall, the Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln Site Exhibition Hall, and the Jun Porcelain Engineering Technology Research and Development Center. It is the only specialized Jun porcelain museum in China.

The central design concept of the museum logo originates from the ancient saying “Among the nine heavens, the central one is called Jun.” Yu divided the world into nine regions, with Yu Prefecture (豫州) at the center, and Jun Terrace (钧台) lies at the heart of Yu Prefecture. The main symbol of the logo is an artistic rendering of the common radical “宀” found in the Chinese characters “宋” (Song), “官” (Official), “窑” (Kiln), and “宝” (Treasure). It also resembles the opening of a kiln filled with pottery, using varying patterns to emphasize the meaning of “Jun at the center.” Thus, this icon not only signifies the preciousness and magnificence of Jun porcelain and the uniqueness of the Song Dynasty Jun Official Kiln but also reflects the long history, profound cultural heritage, and significant historical status of Yuzhou—the birthplace of Jun porcelain.
