Former Residence of Song Pingsan

The Former Residence of Song Pingsan is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

Former Residence of Song Pingsan: Located in the central part of Qianjing Village, Qianjing Township, about 15 kilometers north of Yuzhou City.

The Song Family Courtyard in Qianjing Village, Qianjing Township, Yuzhou City, features deep courtyards, an elegant and classic style, with over 300 rooms of various sizes, covering an area of more than 6,000 square meters. It is one of the better-preserved and larger-scale groups of Qing Dynasty residential buildings in Yuzhou City.

This two-courtyard Qing-style quadrangle was the birthplace and the place where the young revolutionary pioneer Song Pingsan studied and lived in his youth. Built between the Xianfeng and Tongzhi reigns of the Qing Dynasty, the residence is a complex of small blue-tiled buildings. The rear courtyard and the west wing are connected by an arched gate, with the front and back of the lintel inscribed with the raised characters “Níng Ruì” (Gathering Auspiciousness) and “Chéng Ēn” (Receiving Grace), respectively. In 2008, the Former Residence of Song Pingsan was designated by the People’s Government of Henan Province as part of the “Fifth Batch of Key Cultural Relics Protection Units of Henan Province.”

Song Pingsan (1881–1930), a native of Yuxian County (now Yuzhou), Henan Province, was a revolutionary martyr.

Originally named Wuzhao, he was born in Yuxian in 1881. He studied at a private school in his childhood and was diligent and studious. At the age of 20, he passed the imperial examination for xiucai (a scholar degree) during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty. In 1904, he was admitted to the Imperial University of Peking. In 1907, in search of the truth to save the nation, Song Pingsan went to Tokyo, Japan, to further his studies at the Tokyo College of Law and Politics. Influenced by Sun Yat-sen’s democratic revolutionary ideas, he joined the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance (Tongmenghui).
