Wowan Site

The Wowan Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Henan Province.

The Wowan Site is located 6.5 kilometers east of Yucheng County and 500 meters north of the Xuchang–Luoyang Highway, within Wowan Village. It borders the Ying River on the north, west, and east sides, stretching approximately 1,000 meters from east to west and 400 meters in width. The small elevated area in the eastern part of the site is relatively well-preserved, while the central section has suffered significant damage. The cultural layer in the western part is 1–2 meters thick. In 1979, trial excavations were carried out on the small elevated area in the eastern part of the site. Artifacts identified included bag-footed gui-shaped vessels, deep round-bottomed tripod vessels with red exteriors and black interiors coated in clam shell powder, and high-footed ding tripods also coated in clam shell powder. These items were determined to be relics from the early period of the Henan Longshan Culture, making this one of the more significant sites discovered in the early activity center of the Xia tribe. The site also yielded a vertical-shaft tomb from the Spring and Autumn Period, which contained a number of burial objects such as bronze ware, pottery, jade artifacts, bronze ding cauldrons, and bronze gui food vessels. Research suggests that this was likely the burial ground of the Jian family clan during the Spring and Autumn Period.
