Prince's Hill Site

The Prince's Hill Site is a national key cultural heritage protection unit.

The Prince's Hill Site is a provincial-level cultural heritage protection unit announced by the People's Government of Henan Province in June 1963. Its overall number is 168, and its classification number is 19.

This site is located on Prince's Hill, 600 meters south of Rangdong Town, Dengzhou City. To the north of the site lies Haozhuang Village, to the south Zhengzhuang Village, to the west Guanzhuang Village and the village office of Shuangmiao Village. In ancient times, the Qi River flowed along its western side (it dried up long ago; in 1958, the riverbed was filled in). This river was the water source used by ancient people for daily life. The site still rises about 10 meters above the ground, presenting as a gentle sloping mound. The site centers around the highest point of the hill, roughly forming a square with each side about 500 meters long, covering a total area of approximately 250,000 square meters. The cultural layer is 2–4 meters thick. Artifacts unearthed include: duck-billed tripod legs, fingerprint-patterned tripod legs, tripod rims, gray high-neck jar rims, red and gray pottery bowls, pottery cup bottoms, pottery pedestals, striped gray pottery jar rims, red pottery jar rims, black pottery ewers, pottery spinning whorls, stone axes, deer antlers, and human skeletons, among others. Based on the artifacts, the cultural nature of this site is determined to belong to Phase II of the Zhishui River Valley culture during the Neolithic Age. In June 1976, a regional cultural relics survey team inspected the site and concluded that although it had suffered varying degrees of damage due to local residents digging for nitrate soil, a significant portion remains preserved, and the underground still holds many important materials valuable for research. Therefore, it remains designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage protection unit.

In accordance with the spirit of the second item, second clause of the "Henan Province Opinions on Defining the Protection Scope of Underground Cultural Heritage Sites Such as Ancient Sites, City Ruins, and Tombs," the protection scope is defined as follows:

I. Key Protected Area:

A key protected area extends 50 meters outward from the edge of the site.

II. General Protected Area:

Using the boundary of the key protected area as the baseline, it extends 50 meters eastward, 40 meters westward to the main road east of Guanzhuang Village, 100 meters northward to a point 100 meters north of Zhengzhuang Village, and 150 meters northward to a point 150 meters south of Haozhuang Village.

Additional note: Prince's Hill is located 26 kilometers northeast of Dengzhou City, between Zhengzhuang Village, Caocao Village, and Rangnan Neighborhood Committee of Rangdong Town, approximately 300 meters from Provincial Road Yu 23. It is a Neolithic settlement site primarily characterized by the Yangshao Culture. The site rises 10 meters above the ground, forming a gently sloping square mound with sides about 500 meters in length, covering a total area of 250,000 square meters. The cultural layer is 2–6 meters thick and is well-preserved.

This site was designated as a provincial-level protection unit by the provincial government in June 1963, with the designation number 148. Prince's Hill is also known as Prince's Slope. According to the annotated version of the Nanyang Prefecture Annals from the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty: "Chen Shubao, the last emperor of the Chen Dynasty, lived in Rang as a child under the care of a Zhou Dynasty tutor, later returning as the Chen Crown Prince. The slope is named after the prince."

The Rangnan Community Neighborhood Committee is located in the southern part of Rangdong Town, governing four natural villages and nine villager groups. It covers an area of 1.3 square kilometers, with 690 mu of arable land and a population of 1,170. The resident population of migrant workers and merchants is over 4,000. Rangnan Community is a Red Flag branch of Dengzhou City, ranking at the forefront in comprehensive strength within Rangdong. In 2008, the per capita net income reached 6,780 yuan.
