Huzhai Site

The Huzhai Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Henan Province.

The Huzhai Site is located in Huzhai Village, southwest of the county town. It is a square-shaped terrace that slopes from east to west. Due to years of earthmoving by villagers, the remaining area covers over ten thousand square meters. Cultural layers up to several meters thick can be seen in cross-sections around the site. The upper layer of soil is dark gray, while the lower layer is light gray. The soil is soft, mixed with loess and a significant amount of red-fired clay chunks. The upper part of the site contains a cluster of tombs where a large number of hollow bricks and interlocking bricks have been discovered. The middle section has yielded artifacts such as pottery net sinkers and stone spades. There are more gray and black pottery pieces, followed by red pottery. In addition to plain surfaces, the most common decorative patterns are cord marks, generally coarse cord marks. Artifacts include li tripods, jars, and cauldrons, most of which date back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. This site represents a thickly stratified Shang and Zhou cultural relic area in eastern Henan and has now been designated as a provincial-level key cultural heritage protection unit.
