The Yongding River Canyon is a renowned upper reaches valley of the Yongding River in Beijing, also called the Guanting Mountain Gorge or Youzhou Canyon. Towering high mountains line both sides of the canyon, where massive rocks have been naturally weathered. The bottom of the canyon features the fast-flowing Yongding River. The section from the Guanting Reservoir Dam to Yanhecheng is the most scenic part of the Yongding River Canyon, featuring high mountains, deep valleys, and layered peaks, commonly referred to as the "Little Three Gorges." The canyon boasts picturesque scenery—though not the real Three Gorges, it rivals them in beauty. The Yongding River surges like a mighty dragon through the mountains, making this the true grand canyon experience. The canyon walls rise steeply on both sides, composed of deeply weathered limestone. The only difference compared to Yunnan’s famous Three Parallel Rivers region is that the mountains along the Yongding River are drier with sparse vegetation, yet the landscape remains equally magnificent. Along the canyon, you’ll find the ancient battlefield where the Yang family generals and their seven sons and eight nephews fought in Youzhou during the Song Dynasty, as well as the peculiar rock formations in the Jiuzhuangwo Forest area.
