Changping Granary
The Changping Granary is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.
The Changping Granary is located to the west of the Drum Tower in Yu County, Hebei Province. The Yu Prefecture Changping Granary, formerly known as the Fengyu Granary, originally had 11 granary buildings with a total of 55 rooms. It was renovated during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1821–1850), preserving the layout of that time, and at its peak stored 35,000 dan of grain. The ancient granary complex covers an area of 7,700 square meters, and only four granary buildings remain today, all of brick-and-wood construction with flush gable roofs.
Ancient Chinese government granaries were established to regulate grain prices, store grain for famine relief, and supply both official and civilian needs. Their primary function was to use the law of supply and demand to adjust grain availability, thereby stabilizing market prices. When market grain prices were low, the government would appropriately raise prices to purchase large quantities, not only filling major imperial granaries such as the Taicang and Ganquan Granaries, but also ensuring ample supplies in border regions. When market prices were high, the government would sell grain at reduced rates. This approach prevented both "cheap grain hurting farmers" and "expensive grain hurting consumers," playing a positive role in stabilizing the grain market and consolidating feudal rule, while also reflecting, to some extent, the interests and wishes of the populace.
