Sanshan Island, located 27 kilometers north of Laizhou City in the Laizhou Bay, derives its name from its three peaks and its unique geographical position—surrounded by sea on three sides and connected to the mainland on one. The main peak of Sanshan stands at an elevation of 70 meters, overlooking the coastline. Though not particularly high, it boasts breathtaking scenery and a majestic presence. Since ancient times, it has been renowned as a famous maritime mountain and is honored as one of the “Three Divine Mountains of the East Sea.”

The Sanshan area was the site where the fourth deity, the Yin Lord, one of the Eight Deities worshipped by emperors during the Warring States, Qin, and Han dynasties, was venerated. In his quest for immortality and the elixir of life, Emperor Qin Shi Huang traveled eastward by sea and visited the Sanshan Shrine in hopes of meeting the deity. Emperor Wu of Han also journeyed multiple times to the eastern shores of Laizhou Bay, where he erected the “Sanshan Pavilion” to gaze upon the sea. For over two thousand years, countless literati and poets have visited this mountain to admire the ocean, explore its historical sites, and compose verses in praise of Sanshan’s beauty.

Sanshan consists of five peaks, but only three of them are closely connected, tall, and strikingly prominent. These three peaks are shaped like a crescent moon, with the central peak slightly forward and the left and right peaks slightly behind, standing together in mutual support. The mountain’s terrain is gentle in the south and steep in the north, with rugged cliffs rising abruptly above the sea. On the mountain, there are formations such as the Flying Peak and the Immortal Cave, as well as legendary relics like the “Lantern Stone,” “Immortal Pit,” “Chopsticks,” and “Palm Prints,” said to have been left by Emperor Qin Shi Huang during his worship rituals.

The Laizhou Golden Coast Tourism and Holiday Resort project is situated along the coastal area west of Sanshan Island in Laizhou City, covering a total planned area of 20 square kilometers. Themed around “Dragon Culture” and grounded in the maritime folklore traditions of eastern Shandong, the project fully integrates the region’s natural environment with its cultural landscape. Designed and built to standards of uniqueness and timelessness, it aims to create a large-scale seaside-themed scenic area that combines sightseeing, leisure vacations, fitness, and entertainment. The first phase of the project plans an area of 4 square kilometers, to be completed within two years. It will primarily leverage the area’s superior natural resources—including clean seawater, sandy beaches, and pine forests—and center around modern leisure activities and maritime folk culture. With mountains, sea, lakes, forests, and islands forming the scenic backdrop, the development will establish a comprehensive seaside resort integrating tourism, vacationing, fitness, and entertainment. Construction features include Happy Golden Beach, Tianyuan Terrace, Free-Spirited Camping Zone, East Sea Temple, Scenic Canyon, and Natural Ecological Area.
