Former Residence of Liu Zishan

The former residence of Liu Zishan is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The former residence of Liu Zishan is located in Wantou Village, Shahe Town, Laizhou City, at the former site of Laizhou No. 3 Middle School, which is now vacant. The residence is situated on the coastal plain of Laizhou Bay and has a temperate continental climate. It lies about 7 km northwest of the sea. Approximately 5 km to the south, the Shahe River flows from east to west into Laizhou Bay, and about 3 km to the north, the Gaocun River flows from east to west into Laizhou Bay. The residence is situated in the eastern part of Wantou Village, bordered by farmhouses to the west and north, by factory buildings of village and town enterprises to the east, and by an east–west road to the south. It is approximately 18 km northeast of downtown Laizhou City. The grounds are shaded by trees planted throughout the property.

In 1928, the wealthy businessman Liu Zishan commissioned his fourth younger brother to build the "former residence" in his hometown of Wantou Village. After the July 7th Incident, irregular forces such as those led by Zhang Liangchen were stationed here. In 1946, the local armed forces of the Eighth Route Army set up an ammunition factory here to manufacture firearms, grenades, and landmines. In 1947, Zhendong Company under the jurisdiction of the Western Sea Special District conducted business in cotton, pig bristles, and pigskin here. Later, the logistics department of a certain unit of the Eighth Route Army in Jiaodong also established a uniform factory here. From the winter of 1949 to October 1953, the People’s Government of Yenan County (formerly known as the Yenan County Government) was headquartered here. In October 1953, after the Yenan County Government moved out, Yenan County Middle School moved in. In 1956, after Yenan County was merged into Laizhou County, Yenan County Middle School was renamed "Laizhou County No. 3 Middle School." From the 1960s to the 1970s, Laizhou County No. 3 Middle School renovated the classrooms: the central section of the former residence was retained, while all original structures in the eastern and western sections were demolished except for one building in the western section. In 2009, the school was closed, the residence was left vacant, and the Education Bureau assigned personnel to watch over it.

In 2003, Wantou Village, Laizhou City, Shahe Town—where the former residence is located—was designated as a Historical and Cultural Village by the Shandong Provincial Department of Construction due to the well-preserved condition of the residence.

On August 3, 2004, the People’s Government of Laizhou City designated it as a Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.

In December 2006, the People’s Government of Shandong Province designated it as a Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.
