Xingjia Huanghua Village Grottoes

The Xingjia Huanghua Village Grottoes are a protected cultural heritage site of Laizhou City.

The Xingjia Huanghua Village Grottoes are situated on a high rocky outcrop about 200 meters north of Xingjia Huanghua Village, Zhaocun Town, Laizhou City. They lie approximately 1 kilometer west of the north-south highway connecting Laizhou and Zhaocun, and about 1.5 kilometers north of Zhaocun Town. Due to the rock’s resemblance to an upside-down bowl, locals commonly refer to it as the “Stone Bowl House.” A grotto has been carved into the southeastern side of the massive rock, with a trapezoidal entrance that is narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. The chamber inside is 1.4 meters high, 1.9 meters wide from east to west, and 2.6 meters deep from north to south. On the eastern and western walls inside the entrance, there is one carved relief figure standing on each side, each figure being 1.1 meters tall and 0.3 meters wide, with the reliefs themselves about 3 centimeters in height. The figure on the western wall wears a square scarf-like hat, a short-sleeved fitted tunic, a tight skirt that reveals the boots, and a belt around the waist. The figure on the eastern wall wears a short-sleeved tunic, a floor-length skirt, a flowing ribbon over the shoulders, and has either an elaborate hairstyle or a hat. Both figures hold some kind of sword or club-like weapon in front of their chests, and the carvings feature simple yet smooth lines. Based on the style of the statues, their attire, and the carving techniques, they are believed to date back to the Song and Yuan dynasties. The interior of the grotto is empty, but the eastern wall bears randomly carved characters such as “大” (big), “小” (small), “上” (up), and “下” (down), which were added later by others. The discovery of this grotto holds significant reference value for the study of the history and art of grotto carvings in the Jiaodong region.

In 2012, it was designated as a key cultural heritage protection site of Laizhou City.
