Panjiazhuang Site

The Panjiazhuang Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Panjiazhuang Site is located on the western slope of a hill 500 meters south of Panjiazhuang Village, Baishatan Town, Rushan City. About 500 meters southeast of the site, there is a small river, and a north-south path crosses the western part of the site. The site stretches approximately 450 meters from east to west and about 250 meters from north to south, covering a total area of around 110,000 square meters. It was discovered during an archaeological survey in August 1977. In November 1979, the Archaeological Research Institute of Peking University, the Yantai Cultural Relics Management Committee, and the Rushan County Library jointly conducted a follow-up investigation of the site. In December 2009, during the third national cultural relics census, another revisit took place and some samples were collected. Analysis of the collected samples indicates that the site mainly consists of Neolithic Longshan Culture remains, along with a small number of artifacts from the Yueshi Culture. Currently, the overall site remains well-preserved.

According to investigations, due to land leveling over the years, about one meter of soil was removed from the western part of the site, exposing a cultural deposit layer approximately 0.20–0.50 meters thick. Few surface artifacts are visible in this section. The eastern part has a slightly thicker cultural layer, generally around 0.30–0.50 meters, with more pottery shards, shells, and other surface artifacts. On the exposed cliffs, remains such as ash pits can be seen, and a large number of pottery fragments and stone tools were collected.

The pottery fragments are predominantly sandy red-brown pottery, followed by sandy black pottery, brown pottery, and clayey black pottery, with a small amount of clayey red-brown pottery, most of which were wheel-made. Jars and ding (tripod cauldrons) mostly have flat bottoms, some featuring off-center spiral patterns made by rope cutting, with mostly plain surfaces. The decorative patterns mainly include cord marks, appliqué bands, incised lines, grooved patterns, and nipple-like projections. Identifiable vessel shapes include jars, ding, yan (steamers), vessel lids, ring-footed plates, basins, cups, dou (bean pots), and spindle whorls. Additionally, a small number of fragments from Yueshi Culture pottery lids and high-necked jars were found.

The stone tools include stone axes, arrowheads, balls, and mortars, all of which were polished.

In April 1981, the People’s Government of Rushan County designated it as a key cultural relic protection unit.

On June 23, 2015, the Panjiazhuang Site was listed by the People’s Government of Shandong Province as part of the fifth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Shandong.
