Dingzhou Museum

Dingzhou Museum is located on the south side of Zhongshan East Road in Dingzhou City, adjacent to four key cultural heritage sites: Kaiyuan Temple Pagoda, Guanwen Examination Hall, Confucian Temple, and the former residence of Yan Yangchu.

Dingzhou Museum currently houses over 50,000 cultural relics, including three national treasure-level artifacts and 965 precious relics. The collections are diverse, encompassing pottery, porcelain, jade, stone, gold, silver, bronze, bone, wood, and more, predominantly from the Han and Song dynasties, characterized by strong local features and distinct historical elements. Based on its collection highlights, the museum features permanent exhibitions such as “The Mausoleums of the Han Dynasty,” “Buddhas of the Northern Dynasties,” “The World in White,” “A Millennium Beyond the Dust,” “Historical Literature of Southern Ji,” and “Stars Over Hometown.”

Covering an area of about 55 acres, Dingzhou Museum has a total construction area of approximately 25,600 square meters, with 7,000 square meters of exhibition space and 3,000 square meters of storage. The building has four floors above ground and one underground. The museum features six public exhibition halls: The Mausoleums of the Han Dynasty, Buddhas of the Northern Dynasties, The World in White, A Millennium Beyond the Dust, Historical Literature of Southern Ji, and Stars Over Hometown. These six thematic exhibitions showcase the development and transformation of the Dingzhou region across a millennium, arranged in chronological order.

Dingzhou Museum is a landmark structure in the historic city restoration and renovation project of Dingzhou. Its bracket sets (dougong), raised platforms, and sloping roofs incorporate architectural elements from the Han dynasty, reflecting the solemn grandeur and classic elegance of Han-style architecture in its overall design.

The design is inspired by the “Culture of the Zhongshan Kingdom,” ingeniously incorporating features such as terraces, sloping roofs, and bracket sets (dougong), giving the museum a majestic presence.

Dingzhou Museum currently houses over 50,000 cultural relics, including three national treasure-level artifacts, 107 first-grade relics, 214 second-grade relics, and 644 third-grade relics. In addition to a vast collection of exquisite artifacts, the museum also preserves over 20,000 volumes of ancient books and historical records. Among these, there are 968 types and over 6,900 volumes in the Classics section, covering 4,245 categories across the Four Treasuries (Classics, History, Philosophy, and Literature). Moreover, the museum holds a unique collection of 100 wooden cases containing 30,000 woodblock-printed pages of the Ji Fu Series, produced and preserved by the renowned Qing Dynasty scholar Wang Hao and his son Wang Yanlun from Dingzhou. This collection holds significant historical research value.
