Linyi New Century Square

New Century Square is situated in the heart of Linyi County. It was completed in October 1997, measuring 160 meters in width from east to west and 260 meters in length from north to south, with a total area of 41,600 square meters. The square is designed in the shape of a roaring torch, and it earned its name by being constructed at the turn of the century. The outer rim of the torch's handle is paved with 1,997 yellow square bricks, and the torch flame features 21 radiating lines made of crystal white jade granite. These 21 rays symbolize China’s stride from the current century into the great 21st century, following the "Three-Step" development strategy proposed by the central government. The four corners of the square are adorned with three radiating lines each, paved with red square bricks, representing good fortune and prosperity for the people of Linyi throughout the year’s twelve months. The square’s iconic sculpture is a stainless steel piece, designed and manufactured by the Central Academy of Arts and Design. Its shape resembles a flag, demonstrating the people of Linyi marching forward into the 21st century under the great banner; it also looks like a soaring dove of peace, symbolizing that the 21st century is one of peace and development; and it evokes the image of a blooming Bauhinia flower, marking the year the square was completed — the year of Hong Kong’s return. The theme of the sculpture is “Splendor of the Century,” expressing the determination of the people of Linyi to build on past achievements and create new glories for the century.

New Century Square is ranked among the top ten cultural squares in Shandong Province and is recognized as an outstanding cultural square in the province. In recent years, major media outlets such as China Central Television (CCTV) and Shandong Television have hosted numerous large-scale cultural performances here. With “monthly themes and weekly performances,” the square has become a grand stage showcasing the spirit and vibrancy of the people of Linyi.
