Chen Yi's Command Post

Chen Yi's Command Post is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism destination.

The former site of Chen Yi's Command Post is located in Shiwanzi Village, Tieche Township, Laicheng District. Situated at the foot of a mountain and relatively concealed, making it difficult for enemy aircraft to detect, it served as an ideal command center. The site is a traditional quadrangle courtyard building constructed in 1917, covering an area 25 meters long from north to south and 18 meters wide. There are currently 12 tiled rooms, including five northern rooms that are 18 meters long from east to west and 5 meters wide and 7 meters high. The ridges and eaves are decorated with ceramic animal ornaments. There are three rooms each on the western and southern sides, built in the same style as the northern rooms. The southeastern main gate consists of one room, standing 5 meters high, 3.75 meters wide, and 3.25 meters deep. The original eastern rooms were demolished after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. All structures feature stone foundations, brick walls, and gray tiles.

During the Battle of Laiwu, Commander Chen Yi of the East China Field Army headquarters and others planned and directed the campaign here, leading to a victorious outcome. In 1977, after being designated as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit, residents within the courtyard were relocated and the site was converted into exhibition rooms. The northern rooms display the original office furniture such as desks, chairs, beds, and tables used at the time. The western rooms feature exhibition boards introducing the commanders who participated in the Battle of Laiwu, including portraits and biographies of both the East China Field Army and the Li Xianzhou Group. The southern exhibition room uses a combination of actual battle photos and text panels to briefly outline the course of the battle. On the screen wall inside the southeastern main gate is inlaid a porcelain wall poem inscribed by Marshal Chen Yi to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Laiwu.

Chen Yi (August 26, 1901 – January 6, 1972), whose given name was Shijun and courtesy name Zhonghong, was a native of Lezhi, Sichuan. He was an outstanding member of the Chinese Communist Party, a tested and loyal communist fighter, a great proletarian revolutionary, statesman, military strategist, diplomat, and poet. He was one of the founders and leaders of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, a Marshal of the People's Republic of China (one of the Ten Marshals), and an eminent leader of the Party and the country. He also served as the first Mayor of Shanghai in New China.
