Fanggan Village
A provincial-level featured tourism village. The Fanggan Ecological Scenic Area developed by the village is a national 4A-level tourist attraction. Fanggan Village is under the jurisdiction of Xueye Town in the Xueye Tourism Area. With its beautiful natural environment and forest coverage rate of over 97%, it is hailed as a “green paradise,” a “jewel of the mountains,” and “China’s No. 1 ecological village.” In 2009, the villagers of Fanggan identified the consumption trends and psychological needs of urban dwellers who enjoy returning to nature, experiencing rural folklore, and seeking differences in living environments. As a result, they launched a homestay and folk tourism business, attracting urban and out-of-town tourists to eat, stay, and work alongside villagers. Activities include grinding corn for pancakes, fruit picking, bonfire performances, learning to sing Laiwu Bangzi opera, and celebrating the Lunar New Year in a farmhouse. Today, Fanggan Village has become a well-known brand and popular destination for rural tourism in Shandong Province.
Fanggan Village is covered in greenery, with villa-style homes for every household. Step outside and you’re in a garden; the cultivated fields are like pastoral scenes, orchards lie near the mountains, and the distant hills resemble a park. Strolling through the village streets, visitors are greeted by lush greenery. Tourists leisurely walk along the lakeside, while not far away, boats shuttle back and forth on the off-road lake.
Throughout Fanggan Village, large and small bodies of water are lush and scattered like stars. This Jiangnan-like charm and elegance are the handiwork of the villagers, achieved with nothing but hoes and shovels—it is their masterpiece. Today, the scenic area boasts over 100 attractions, integrating mountains, water, forests, springs, pools, waterfalls, gorges, and caves. It also brings together folk legends of historical figures such as Huang Chao, Li Ben, Zhang Dao Yi, Chen Gan Yu, and the Old Man with the Bald Tail. With its unique appeal of natural scenery, cultural heritage, and ecological conservation, the “hidden gem” Jiulong Grand Canyon stands out as a rare spectacle along the northern tourism route of Laiwu. Stretching over 20 kilometers, the grand canyon is named for its winding, twisting path. Deep within the canyon, pristine natural scenery remains intact. The most representative and densely packed section of attractions lies from “Heilong Pool” upstream to “Hukou Waterfall,” which is the essence of Jiulong Grand Canyon. Waterfalls cascade down the cliffs, with white ribbons of water plunging dozens of meters, splashing like flying petals and shimmering brilliantly—truly a vision of “waterfalls plunging three thousand feet, as if the Milky Way fell from the sky.” Near the “Dragon Pool Star View” observation point, a mountain spring flows year-round, believed by legend to have the power to improve eyesight. During spring and autumn, on clear days around noon, standing at the “Ancient Star-Gazing Platform” beneath the Sky-Piercing Cliff allows you to spot a bright star in the sky—a celestial body astronomers call “Vega.”
There are now 170 households in Fanggan Village, each living in two-story buildings, with standalone homes and courtyards. These individual courtyards have been transformed into folk inns, with plaques issued by the Shandong Provincial Tourism Bureau reading “Hospitality Homes” hanging on the walls. The ground floor is for the family’s own residence, while the four rooms upstairs have been converted into guest rooms, including single, double, and suite options. Each room is kept exceptionally neat and clean.
