Laidong Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall
The Laidong Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.
The Laidong Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall was established in May 2005, funded by a donation of 600,000 yuan from the three Li sisters of Nanyu Village. The name of the memorial hall was inscribed by Feng Deying, author of the novel "Bitter Melon Flower."
The Laidong Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the anti-Japanese war efforts in Laidong, which refers to the mountainous eastern region of Laiwu. In September 1938, Zhang Jingwu and Li Yu led over a hundred cadres from the Central Cadre Work Group from Yan'an to Yishui. Dozens of these cadres remained in the Laidong area and established the Changwen (Changzhuang and Nanwenzi) Anti-Japanese Base. After the establishment of the Changwen Anti-Japanese Base, in January 1940, due to the unique geographical conditions and strong support from the local population, the First Arsenal of the Shandong Column of the Eighth Route Army relocated from Zichuan to Nanyu Village. The arsenal stayed in Nanyu Village for over three years. During that time, Japanese forces attacked, burned, looted, and massacred the village up to 13 times, including the notorious Nanyu Massacre. The villagers of Nanyu made tremendous contributions to the arsenal.
In December 2014, the city and district government renovated and expanded the memorial hall, which reopened in late August 2015. Starting in May 2016, further expansion projects were carried out, including the construction of a memorial wall, expansion of the parking lot, and road paving, aiming to develop the Laidong Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall into a patriotic and Party spirit education base for Laiwu District.
The memorial hall consists of five exhibition halls, displaying over 300 photographs, three dioramas, and more than 60 exhibits. The exhibitions focus on the establishment of the anti-Japanese base and the united front in the Laidong region during the war, as well as the historical facts of the resistance. It highlights stories of the anti-Japanese struggle in Laidong, objectively and truthfully showcasing the outstanding contributions made by the local Party, government, military, and civilians during the war. It also reflects the heinous crimes committed by the Japanese imperialism against the people of Laidong and demonstrates the great patriotism, bravery, tenacity, and revolutionary spirit of sacrifice of the people of Laidong, especially those of Laiwu.
