The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall in Tengzhou is a cultural heritage protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall in Tengzhou is located in Dawu Village, Dawu Town, Tengzhou City. Its construction dates back to the Qing Dynasty. On December 7, 2006, the Zhang Family Ancestral Hall was designated as part of the third batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units by the People's Government of Shandong Province.

According to the *Genealogy of the Ancient Teng Zhang Clan*, the ancestral hall was first built during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty and completed in the 13th year of the Qianlong reign (1748). It faces south and covers a total area of 1,440 square meters. The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall features a grand architectural scale and rigorous structure, with both inner and outer courtyards that are both harmoniously integrated and independently distinctive, exemplifying the classic enclosed courtyard style of northern Chinese architecture. Along the north-south axis centered on the main gate and central hall, there are two successive courtyards. Outside the main gate are large square brick-built eight-character walls, flanked by a pair of stone lions. The inner courtyard has a floor paved with square bricks, with three-room wing halls on the east and west sides, each featuring a rolled shed roof, and a tall, majestic main hall at the rear. All the halls and rooms have flush gable roofs covered with gray clay tiles. The main hall serves as the central chamber, where the memorial tablets of the Zhang ancestors are displayed according to lineage and seniority in both the main hall and the side wings.

The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall is a place where the Zhang clan members from Dawu worship their ancestors. In the north, it is also referred to as a family temple. Every year on the 12th day of the second lunar month, the Zhang clan holds a grand ancestor worship ceremony known as the “Ding Sacrifice.” Following traditional rituals, an elder of higher seniority and prestige within the clan is selected to serve as the master of ceremonies, while participants—mostly representatives from various clan branches—kneel in attendance. Attendees dress neatly and are arranged according to seniority, paying solemn reverence.

According to records from the Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Survey, the Zhang Family Ancestral Hall in Tengzhou City is one of the more intact and larger-scale ancient clan ancestral halls preserved in the southern Shandong and northern Jiangsu region. Its form, style, and architectural layout serve as tangible evidence for studying feudal patriarchal clan culture and the art of ancestral hall architecture. In February 1995, the “Zhang Family Ancestral Hall” was listed as a municipal-level key cultural heritage protection unit by the Tengzhou Municipal People's Government. In 2006, it was further designated as part of the *third batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units* by the Shandong Provincial People's Government. In May 2015, the Zhang Family Ancestral Hall in Dawu, Tengzhou, was included in the first batch of the “Rural Memory” project cultural heritage list in Shandong Province. The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall is not merely a place for clan worship but has been elevated to a historical and cultural heritage site of the Chinese nation. It embodies profound cultural significance and stands as a valuable cultural treasure.

However, due to years of neglect, the ancestral hall structure has suffered severe damage. In August 2013, the Tengzhou Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Press and Publication commissioned the Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Science and Technology Protection Center to formulate the *First Phase Conservation and Restoration Plan for the Zhang Family Ancestral Hall*. In September 2014, the provincial cultural relics bureau approved the plan and allocated special funds to launch the first phase of restoration work. This project adhered to the principles of preserving the original appearance of the cultural relic and restoring it as it was, aiming to retain the historical authenticity and integrity of the ancestral hall as much as possible. The three-month project completed the restoration of the east and west wing rooms and the east gate tower. To restore the ancestral hall to its former glory, the Tengzhou Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Press and Publication pressed on and launched the second phase of the restoration project on March 17, 2016. According to Mr. Zhang Guangtan, president of the Tengzhou Zhang Family Ancestral Hall Cultural Heritage Protection and Inheritance Association, the second phase of restoration mainly focused on the main hall, corridor hall, and lecture hall.

Today, after two rounds of restoration, the Zhang Family Ancestral Hall has been completely revitalized. Even more encouragingly, a library and a senior citizens’ activity center have been established inside the hall. The ancient family temple now plays an important role in enriching the spiritual and cultural life of Dawu villagers. The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall is like a senior who continues to contribute meaningfully, infused once again with new vitality.
