Nanchang Zoo serves as a science education base.

Nanchang Zoo is located on Taohua South Road in Xihu District, Nanchang City. Here, you can get up close and personal with a variety of adorable animals, enjoy spectacular circus and dolphin shows, making it an ideal destination for family outings. The zoo is divided into several themed areas. The China Zone highlights the profound 5,000-year cultural heritage of China, featuring architecture in the Huizhou style—constructed with gray bricks, gray tiles, and large red pillars, exuding strong Chinese characteristics. The Africa Zone is built with mud walls, thatched roofs, large unprocessed stones, and logs, giving off a rugged and wild vibe. The Aquatic Amphibian Zone emphasizes "fun" with reptile footprints printed on the ground and snake-shaped benches adding to the playful atmosphere. The Australia Zone draws inspiration from the Aboriginal weapon "boomerang" for its structure, with massive rocks painted with ancient hunting scenes, offering visitors a rich taste of Australian culture. The Americas Zone focuses on Mayan culture, featuring pyramids, reliefs, and ruins, reflecting abandoned cities and lost civilizations. Housing animals in these uniquely themed zones enhances the experience of nature and individuality.

The early origins of Nanchang Zoo can be traced back to the animal corner established in 1953 within Bayi Park in Nanchang. It was later relocated to People's Park and became an independent urban zoo in February 1987. Starting in 2004, the Nanchang municipal government invested 380 million yuan in infrastructure to relocate the zoo as a whole. The relocation project began on October 1, 2005, and the newly built zoo officially opened to the public on January 1, 2011.

The new Nanchang Zoo covers an area of nearly 1,000 acres, exhibiting over 300 species and nearly 10,000 animals and birds. With over 80% green coverage, the park features a winding water system spanning approximately 200 acres, creating a unique ecological landscape in the modern city. The overall layout of the zoo follows the geographical distribution of animals, including the Africa Zone, Americas Zone, Australia Zone, China Zone, Aquatic Animal Zone, and Herbivore Zone. The architectural styles of the animal enclosures are designed with theme park concepts in mind, with each area showcasing regional characteristics—featuring both rare species displays and natural cohabitation environments. The visiting routes include both land and water paths, offering varied viewing angles from above and below, and multiple ways to explore on foot or by ride. Whether for sightseeing, playing, learning, or exploring, visitors can enjoy the wild charm of nature and the exotic flair of distant lands.

The new Nanchang Zoo integrates four major functions: conservation, research, education, and entertainment. Centered around animals and prioritizing visitors, it actively promotes educational and entertaining nature experiences, striving to establish itself as Jiangxi’s ecological showcase and Nanchang’s city landmark.
