The Former Site of the Southeast Bureau of the CPC Central Committee is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Former Site of the Southeast Bureau of the CPC Central Committee is located adjacent to the Former Site of the New Fourth Army Command in Nanchang. From January 6 to April 4, 1938, the Southeast Bureau of the CPC Central Committee was stationed here. It was responsible for organizing and directing the reorganization of the Red Army guerrilla forces from eight southern provinces into the New Fourth Army. It also undertook the important tasks of restoring and developing the Party’s organizations, strengthening the Party’s forces, and leading the anti-Japanese salvation movement.

The site was originally the residence of salt merchant Yu Xingqing. Built in 1917, the site covers a total area of approximately 1,600 square meters, with a built-up area of 1,908.2 square meters. It consists of five two-and-a-half-story buildings of similar size, all designed in the French architectural style. Each building has two floors with a brick-and-wood structure, wooden stairs and floors, and the upper floor decking is made of wooden lathes with external plastering (commonly known as “làn bǎn jīn” or “rotten board ribs”). The roofs feature herringbone trusses with round timber beams and are covered with gray machine-made tiles (produced by the Hubei Hanyang Huaxing Brick Factory, a Sino-foreign joint venture at the time, under the brand “Yuli” gray machine tiles). The exterior walls are constructed with red machine-made bricks, with the short side of each brick stamped on the reverse with the French word “WAY”.

The site features restored exhibits of the offices of the Southeast Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the former residence of salt merchant Yu Xingqing.

On October 7, 2019, the Former Site of the Southeast Bureau of the CPC Central Committee was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
