Turtle Shell Mound is located to the north of Nanshan Mountain, on the southern shore of East Lake, facing the Du Town Government across the lake. It is as renowned as the “Wild Elder Spring” and the “Old Master Temple.” There’s a saying: “Wild Elder Spring halfway up Nanshan Mountain,” “Old Master Temple on Golden Sand Beach,” and “Turtle Shell Mound resting on the southern shore of East Lake.” Legend has it that during the great battle of Poyang Lake, Zhu Yuanzhang was defeated at the Old Master Temple and was saved by a golden turtle—this very spirit. One day, while wandering around, it came to Nanshan and, charmed by the beautiful mountains and clear waters, often came here to rest. Look (standing at the top of Nanshan and looking north)—the golden turtle is resting at the foot of the mountain, with patterns on its shell. And look (walking southeast along the lakeside road and looking over)—isn’t that the same golden turtle swimming in East Lake? It even has a crest on its head. The Turtle Shell Mound Tea and Fruit Orchard sits right on the back of this golden turtle. In the orchard, you can find freshly picked and hand-roasted teas from the Pure Brightness and Grain Rain seasons (they say, “Drink Grain Rain tea, and you’ll never need a doctor”). There are also peaches, plums, pears, apricots, oranges, pomelos, oranges, as well as chestnuts, loquats, persimmons, and figs. The air is filled with birdsong and floral fragrance, and the trees are heavy with fruit. Since the Spring Equinox, many people have come here—office workers picking tea on weekends, retirees chatting and exercising, parents bringing their children to enjoy farm-style food, people renting trees to plant seedlings, teachers leading students for games and spring outings, and young ladies and married women specializing in tea-picking and fruit-selling.
