Guanyin Island

Guanyin Island, also known as Fengchi Island, covers an area of 31 hectares and is located east of the Wuning Bridge. It earned the name Fengchi (Phoenix Wing) due to its shape resembling a phoenix spreading its wings. The island was developed and invested in by Jiangxi Wandao Lake Tourism Development Co., Ltd., established in November 2001.

On the western side of Guanyin Island, the former old county town’s Lion Cliff, three li to the east of the east gate, once had a Guanyin Pavilion that was quite famous and bustling with worshippers, but it was destroyed during the war. Now, where Lion Cliff once stood, there is only an expanse of water, with just a small hill remaining at the original site.

Mr. Cai Maoyou, Chairman of Beijing Taolue Group and a native of Ruichang, was invited to develop tourism in Wuning. Upon learning that there had been a “Guanyin Pavilion” on the northern bank of the Xiu River, outside the old county town’s east gate, which was once very popular and highly reputed for its incense offerings before being destroyed in the war, he decided to rebuild it in this time of peace and booming tourism prospects. However, due to the limited size of the rocky mountain, he chose Fengchi Island instead. A 32-meter-tall, over 700-ton white granite statue of Guanyin, produced in Fujian, has been erected on the island, hailed as the largest outdoor Guanyin statue in Asia. Thirty-two additional 3-meter-tall statues representing various incarnations of Guanyin have also been placed around the island for visitors and worshippers to admire. The stone statue was created over two years by a team of 100 artisans led by Mr. She Guozhen, a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. The rebuilt Guanyin Pavilion is situated north of the large Guanyin stone statue, covering an area of 1.3 hectares with a five-courtyard temple complex. Supporting structures include the Heavenly King Hall, Guanyin Hall, Scripture Depository, Bell Tower, and Drum Tower.
