Tea Island

Tea Island, covering an area of 18.5 hectares, is located in Yangzhou Township on Wuning Lake, adjacent to Lakeview Island. It was developed and invested in by Jiangxi Wandaohu Tourism Development Co., Ltd., established in November 2001. Currently, the island is themed around the rich tea culture of Wuning, with all tourism facilities centered around the concept of “tea.” It features a 1-hectare tea plantation, a tea processing workshop, a tea tasting building, tea pavilions, a teapot square, a Tea Classics stone tablet corridor, and a statue of Lu Yu, the Sage of Tea. Additionally, there is a 200-seat theater on the island.

Tea Island is a high-end, deeply cultural tea project launched by Wandaohu Company, taking advantage of the historical fact that Wuning County is the birthplace of Ninghong Tea—one of Jiangxi Province’s two major tea varieties. Though small, the island spans only 278 acres but enjoys an excellent location on the main waterway, adjacent to Lakeview Island and within view of Survival Island and Bayberry Island.

Wuning County has a long history of tea cultivation and production. As early as the Song Dynasty, there were records describing “green tea bushes stretching across the countryside, with the fragrance of tea in every household.” The *Tujing Reading Chronicles* states: “All of Wuning produces tea, known as red tea during the Song Dynasty.” At that time, it became one of China’s famous teas, an export delicacy presented as tribute to the imperial court. Moreover, apart from drinking black tea, the people of Wuning also have the custom of serving guests with chrysanthemum tea, sweet potato ball soaked tea, and Sichuan lovage sieve basket tea.

Everything on the island revolves around the theme of “tea.” It features a 15-acre tea plantation, a simple tea processing workshop, an uniquely styled tea tasting building, and a 200-seat theater. Visitors can not only see tea trees but also participate in tea picking and processing. They can enjoy premium Wuning tea ceremonies and experience authentic tea songs, tea operas, and cultural performances.

Wuning is not only a land of tea but also the birthplace of Wuning Drum Song—one of Jiangxi’s two major folk song styles—and Wuning Tea Opera—one of the province’s four major tea operas. While observing tea cultivation, tea processing, and tea tasting on Tea Island, visitors can also gain a concentrated understanding and appreciation of Wuning’s unique folk culture, making it a true delight in life and a highlight for travelers. On the island, we have also built a statue of Lu Yu, the Sage of Tea, a Tea Classics stone tablet corridor, an amusing teapot square, and tea pavilions.

Additionally, because this island was once a famous anti-Japanese battlefield in Wuning County, some bunker ruins remain on the site for visitors to explore.
