Mount Taiping - Yousheng Palace

Mount Taiping, originally named Syluo Mountain, is located at the junction of three townships—Lixi, Futian, and Dadong—in Wuning County. It borders Tongshan County in Hubei Province to the north and is 55 kilometers away from Wuning County’s urban area. This scenic area combines mountainous landscapes with Taoist cultural heritage. Mount Taiping stands at an elevation of 1,329 meters, featuring long, narrow ridges, towering peaks, lush forests, and numerous springs and waterfalls. It is an important mountain within the eastern part of the Mufu Mountain Range.

The mountain is not only known for its spectacular scenery but also for its long-standing Taoist tradition. It gained fame due to the Taoist sanctuary Yousheng Palace, established by the Jiangxi Taoist priest Zhang Quansun. Yousheng Palace became even more renowned because Priest Zhang was conferred the title “True Lord of Natural Spiritual Response” by Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty, and later honored as the “Benevolent Teaching Master, Protector of the Nation and Heavenly Venerable of Taiping” by Emperor Xianzong of the Ming Dynasty.

Yousheng Palace on Mount Taiping was first built in the sixth year of Emperor Lizong’s reign during the Song Dynasty (1233). The structures that have been preserved mainly date from reconstructions carried out since 1979. The entire temple complex is divided into five major sections: Tianyi Yousheng Palace, Wanfu Palace, Wanlu Palace, Wanshou Palace, and Xunshan Hall, covering a total construction area of approximately 1,600 square meters. The temple has experienced several periods of prosperity and decline. Since 1979, the main buildings—including Tianyi Yousheng Palace, Wanfu Palace, Wanlu Palace, and Xunshan Hall—have been fully restored. The site houses imperial edicts bestowed during the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, authentic couplets written by Ming Dynasty scholars such as Fang Mengjin, Mei Yutian, and Zhang Baozeng, as well as cultural relics including the Records of Mount Taiping, Taoist Genealogy of Taiping, ancient bells, plaques, and more. It serves as an important testament to the development of Taoist culture in Wuning County.

In addition to Yousheng Palace—which is listed as a key Taoist site and cultural relic protection unit under development by Wuning County—the mountain also features thirty-two scenic spots, including the Huangyang Sacred Tree, the Personally Planted Cypress, the Alchemy Pavilion, Hulu Flat, Stone Lions, Stone Elephants, the Ancient Well, the Ancient Bell, and the Imperial Furnace bestowed by decree.
