Wan Island Lake

Nestled in the Mufu Mountain Range in the northwest of Jiangxi Province, Wuning County boasts picturesque landscapes with verdant mountains and clear waters. It lies to the east of Mount Lu, a world-renowned historical and cultural mountain, and borders Jiugong Mountain, a national scenic area, to the north. The Xiushui River, one of the five major water systems in Jiangxi, originates in Tonggu County and flows through Xiushui County, Wuning County, and Yongxiu County before emptying into the vast Poyang Lake. For thousands of years, the Xiushui River has flowed ceaselessly, nurturing millions of people along its banks. In the early 1970s, the mighty river was tamed by Asia’s largest earth-filled dam at that time—the Zhelin Dam in Yongxiu County—which transformed a 700-li stretch of the Xiushui River into a serene lake amidst towering gorges. Wan Island Lake, situated at the junction of Jiangxi, Hubei, and Hunan provinces, features more islands than even Qiandao Lake. On Fengchi Island, the world’s largest granite statue of Guanyin, weighing 12,000 tons, stands majestically. This lake, formed by ancient mountains and newly created waters, spans a total area of 460,000 mu, with over 80% of its waters lying within Wuning County. The lake contains more than 1,600 islands, including eight that are over 1,000 mu in size, with the largest spanning 3,576 mu. The islands are lush with vegetation and shaded by green trees, while the lake waters ripple with schools of fish and shrimp. The surrounding hills cast reflections on the water, blending hues of purple and blue. Hence, the name Wan Island Lake came into being.
