Scissors Gorge

The Scissors Gorge scenic area is located to the north of Mount Lu, nestled within the deep valley of Guniuling and beside Wolong Ridge. It is flanked by Little Tianchi Mountain and Olive Mountain, forming a curved trough-shaped valley that resembles a pair of scissors. The gorge stretches from the East and West Forest Temples to the Central Park on Guling Street. Covering an area of 4,800 mu, it is situated 14 kilometers from downtown Jiujiang. The gorge rises in a terraced fashion and is one of the typical areas of Mount Lu featuring steep cliffs and deep valleys. With alternating springs and waterfalls and rocks jutting in all directions, it is renowned in the northern part of Mount Lu for its "cliff faces, bizarre rocks, and flying waterfalls." The valley offers the best vantage point to view the waterfall clouds of Mount Lu, and when gazing from Guniuling at night, one may even catch a glimpse of the faint glow of the so-called Buddha’s lights within the gorge. Originally, this gorge was part of the old hiking route up from Lotus Cave. In 1937, plans were made to build a cable car on Mount Lu, with the top of the gorge chosen as the site for the mountain station terminal. Today, it remains the best hiking route to ascend on foot.

Key Attractions Within the Gorge:

On the eastern side of the gorge lies the Tianhua Palace Temple, built in 1916 by Wu Zhizhi. In 1937, plans were made to construct a cable car on Mount Lu, with this location chosen as the terminal for the mountain station. The area is embraced by peaks, and the mountain winds are extremely strong. From April to June each year, fires in the lower streets can spread rapidly and are difficult to extinguish, with the wind compounding the danger.

On the rocks beside the stream to the north of the gorge are the characters “Zhunti Hall,” inscribed with the date “Summer, 1611, during the Wanli reign.”

Scissors Gorge is famed for its “cliff faces, bizarre rocks, and flying waterfalls,” making it one of the most notable features on the western foothills of Mount Lu. Within the gorge are Dragon Pearl Peak, Horse Saddle Mountain, along with various rocks such as Big and Small Cockscomb Stones, Flying Rock, Sword-Testing Stone, Ox Hoof Stone, Stone Clam, Stone Crab, Stone Tower, Stone Buddha, and Stone Gate. There are also over ten large jade-green pools, and waterfalls including the Twin Falls of Black Dragon Pool, Double-Layered Falls, Dragon Chair Falls, Guniu Pool Falls, Snake Falls, and Dragon Beard Spring (Waterfall).

The Twin Falls of Black Dragon Pool cascade down a hundred-zhang cliff into three pools, resembling flowing pearls on a wall. The upper pool is like a well set in the sky, with an eerie blue water color. The middle pool is closely connected to the upper one, exquisitely clear with magnificent shimmering light. The lower falls are like a jade belt inlaid among dark rocks, pouring into the lower pool, which is narrow and unfathomably deep. Beside the pool lies a huge, smooth rock called Banglong Stone. Rare aquatic creatures—the Dragon Eel—can be found in the pool.

The Dharma-Preaching Platform is located next to the “Flying Rock” at the mountain gate. The characters “Dharma-Preaching Platform” are engraved on the rock, believed to be the spot where the eminent Jin Dynasty monk Huiyuan preached.

The Double-Layered Falls are located at the top of the gorge, where two cliffs face each other with a massive rock in between. Water sprays out from both sides of the rock. The lower falls resemble twin swords drawn from their sheaths or twin rainbows drinking from the pool. The upper falls are majestic, plunging down from a cliff dozens of meters wide, like collapsing ice or snow, with roars like tigers or dragons, misty spray, and, under sunlight, a dazzling array of colors like a mirage.
