Tomb of Zhou Dunyi

The Tomb of Zhou Dunyi is a cultural tourism attraction.

The tomb is that of Zhou Dunyi, a Neo-Confucian scholar of the Northern Song Dynasty. He passed away in 1073 (the sixth year of the Xining era) due to illness at the Lianxi Academy in Jiujiang and was buried about five or six li away at Lishu Ridge (present-day Tanfan Village, Lianhua Town), at the age of 57. The tombs of his first wife, Lady Lu, and his second wife, Lady Pu, are also located on either side of his. In the thirteenth year of the Ming Dynasty’s--era (1490), the Jiujiang prefect Tong Chao built a memorial shrine in front of the tomb, erected a portrait of Zhou, and allocated farmland for its upkeep. The site was then counted as one of the “Ten Scenic Spots of Jiangzhou.” In the thirty-eighth year of the Jiajing era (1559), Governor He Qian ordered Prefect Zhu Rifan to renovate the tomb. In the fifth year of the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty (1855), Peng Yulin, Luo Zenan, and Li Xubin funded a major restoration, reshaping the tomb’s top into the form of a tortoise about six chi in height and 15 chi in diameter. The tomb features inscribed stelae including a poem stele by Li Deyang from the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, a stele commemorating Peng Yulin’s restoration, a stele by Luo Zenan documenting the reconstruction of Zhou’s tomb, and a stele engraved with Zhou’s original diagram of the Supreme Ultimate. The tomb mound was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution but was reconstructed in 1992.
