Jiujiang Museum
The new building of Jiujiang Museum is located on Shangzhou Island in Bali Lake New District, Jiujiang City, covering an area of 112 mu, with a construction area of 18,000 square meters and an exhibition area of 9,800 square meters. It serves functions such as cultural relic exhibitions, academic exchanges, technical preservation of relics, and public services. It is currently the largest in construction area and most fully equipped large-scale comprehensive museum in Jiangxi Province. The new museum stands against the picturesque tourist destination — Mount Lu, faces China’s longest river — the Yangtze River, and is surrounded by the shimmering waters of Bali Lake. It faces the ancient Xunyang City of Jiujiang across the lake. Its location fully reflects the water-loving cultural characteristics of northern Jiangxi residents since ancient times. The construction of the new Jiujiang Museum was a key cultural and livelihood project of the Jiujiang Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the municipal government in 2010. The estimated investment for the project was 120 million RMB. Through the hard work of the construction team, and under the premises of ensuring quality, safety, and speed, the participants fully demonstrated a work ethic of "5+2, day and night," seizing sunny days and fighting through rainy ones. In just 17 months, this highly anticipated cultural and livelihood project was successfully completed. The new museum held a trial opening on May 1, 2012. By the end of 2012, it had welcomed nearly 300,000 visitors free of charge. From May 1 to May 5, 2012 alone, it received over 60,000 visitors, effectively realizing the museum’s social benefits.
Since its establishment in 1978, Jiujiang Museum has collected over 10,000 pieces (sets) of various cultural relics through archaeological excavations, public donations, and private contributions. Some of these relics, such as the Shang Dynasty “Butterfly-patterned Cloud-and-Thunder Design Pottery Jar,” the Eastern Jin Dynasty “Donglin Temple Rice-Begging Jar,” the Southern Song Dynasty “Jiangzhou Lead Coin Token,” and the Yuan Dynasty “Blue-and-White Peony Scroll-Patterned Tower-Capped Vase,” are considered national treasures.
Jiujiang Museum has hosted over 20 various cultural relic exhibitions and has successfully held exhibitions of its collections at institutions such as the Palace Museum, as well as museums in Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, and Shunde, playing a very positive role in promoting Jiujiang.
In 2010, the Jiujiang Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the municipal government implemented the “Strengthen Industry and Revitalize City” strategy, investing 120 million RMB to build the museum in Bali Lake New District.
The museum houses exhibitions on Jiujiang’s history and culture, intangible cultural heritage, folk collections, and international exchanges.
The exhibition area spans 9,800 square meters. It was completed in May 2012 and put into use. Jiujiang Museum is currently the largest in construction area and most fully featured large-scale comprehensive museum in Jiangxi Province.
