Immortal Water Rock

About 20 kilometers from downtown Yingtan City in Jiangxi Province lies the Immortal Water Rock Scenic Area of Longhu Mountain. Travel upstream by small boat or downstream by bamboo raft to admire the peculiar peaks and emerald waters — the experience is relaxing and the scenery is stunning.

Immortal Water Rock is the collective name for Immortal Rock and Water Rock. Water Rock is widely renowned for its jade-green waters and crimson cliffs. The area is scattered with bizarre rocks, where water and mountain reflections create a delightful scene, and the attractions are the most concentrated.

Monk and Nun Peaks ("Lovers’ Bond Stays Ever True"): Also known as Lovers’ Peaks, these mountains are about 200 meters high. The front peak resembles a female profile, while the back peak has a crack on its head, looking like an injured man leaning against a woman’s back. Historically called Male-Female Rocks, the Longhu Mountain Records state: “The Male-Female Rocks are located beneath Immortal Rock. The two rocks resemble humans standing back-to-back, commonly called the Male and Female Rocks.” Geologically, Monk and Nun Peaks are a type of collapsed remnant rock peak landscape, formed through long-term erosion by rainwater and weathering.

Immortal Peach Stone ("Heavenly Peach Delights the Heart"): A towering rock peak, over 80 meters high, resembles a giant peach with a bite taken out when viewed from afar. Legend says it was plucked from the Peach Garden by Sun Wukong during his rebellion in heaven, and that eating a bite grants 9,000 years of life — a folk symbol of longevity. This rock belongs to the collapsed remnant rock peak category, shaped by rain erosion and weathering.

Lotus Stone ("A Triple Blessing Blooms from Stone Lotus"): Located beside the Immortal Peach Stone, this formation consists of over ten large rock petals arranged in a circle, resembling blooming lotus leaves. From a distance, it looks like a still water lily. Within it is a smaller stone resembling a lotus seed, and nearby is a frog-shaped rock, creating a charming "Frog Playing with Lotus" scene. This is a small clustered peak landscape formed from rocks collapsed from higher mountains.

Jade Comb Stone ("Jade Comb Soothes the Heart, Not the Hair"): A large rock emerges from the water, its surface featuring several toothed indentations that resemble a comb. Folklore says it can comb away worries and sorrows. This is a toothed rock formation created by water erosion along the joints of a collapsed cliff rock.

Cinnabar Spoon Rock ("Cinnabar Spoon Dispels Disasters in Dry or Wet"): Located on the cliff face of Golden Bell Peak at Immortal Water Rock, about 2 meters above the water, there is a concave cave that resembles a wooden spoon. Legend says this divine spoon can protect Longhu Mountain from droughts and floods. This is a dissolved and eroded cave formed due to varying resistance of the cliff face to weathering and water erosion.

Immortal Mushroom Stone ("A Thousand Miles of Fate Unveils the Immortal Mushroom"): A rock peak rises from the water with a round top, about 30 meters high, resembling a giant mushroom standing in the water. Legend says it was a gift from the Eight Immortals to Zhang Tianshi. This rock was shaped by prolonged river erosion, forming a concave ring at its base, making the whole structure resemble a mushroom in the water.

Stone Drum Peak ("Silent Stone Drum Resounds from the Heavens"): Also called Literati Peak, this solitary peak about 80 meters high stands by the shore like a giant drum. Viewed from the north, it resembles the faces of Lu Xun or Gorky, hence also known as Literati Peak.

Taoist Hall Rock ("Taoist Hall Ripples Bring Blessings"): A rock about 60 meters high features a large horizontal cave on its water-facing side, carved by river erosion, with fast-flowing, deep water below. Legend says Zhang Tianshi conducted Taoist rituals here to bless travelers with safety and peace.

Cloud Brocade Stone ("Cloud Brocade Hangs Like a Colorful Gate Opens"): A rock peak about 100 meters high and 300 meters long stands by the water. From afar, it appears as if cleaved vertically by an axe, majestic and colorful like a huge piece of cloud-patterned brocade. Legend says this shawl, woven by the heavenly weaver girl, serves as a colorful gate to the human world — passing through it brings happiness and good fortune. The top of the shawl hosts many wild birds, whose white droppings stain the red cliff walls in a spectacular sight.

Fairy Rock ("Before Fairy Rock Ascend to the Immortal Terrace"): A natural masterpiece — a rock peak about 100 meters tall faces south. The lower part of its northern cliff face resembles a naked woman, hailed as “the most spectacular sight under heaven.” These ten scenic wonders are also known in folklore as the “Ten Unbelievables,” each with a touching legend.
