Longhu Mountain Mosquito-Free Village

Mosquito-Free Village is located within the Longhu Mountain scenic area, specifically in Xujia Village on the eastern bank of the Luxi River in the Xianshuiyan Scenic Area. The village has around 50 households and over 200 residents, who are said to be descendants of the legendary immortal Xu Xun. Historically, the villagers have made a living through fishing and farming, and many of them enjoy long lives, earning the village the additional nickname "Longevity Village." Surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing a river on one, the village boasts picturesque scenery. One unique phenomenon in the village is the complete absence of mosquitoes, which is why it is called the "Mosquito-Free Village" and makes it an ideal summer retreat. Why there are no mosquitoes here remains a mystery to this day. Some say it’s due to the village’s unique geographical location—surrounded by mountains on three sides and a river on one. Others suggest that the surrounding area is planted with eucalyptus trees, which have mosquito-repellent properties. Another theory is that there is a cave not far from the village housing thousands of bats that come out at night to feed on mosquitoes in the village. A fourth explanation ties it to the local legend of “Zhang Tianshi Driving Away Mosquitoes for His Mother.” It is said that Zhang Tianshi was extremely filial and, every summer, kept driving mosquitoes away from his mother to spare her their bites—thus, the village has remained mosquito-free ever since.
