The Site of the Great Shangqing Palace is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The Site of the Great Shangqing Palace was discovered in June 2014. After nearly four years of archaeological excavation, an area of 5,000 square meters has been uncovered, revealing 21 architectural remains from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, as well as more than 10,000 pieces of building components and ritual utensils. It is the largest, highest-ranking, with the clearest exposed stratigraphic relationships, and richest in unearthed relics among Taoist Zhengyi sect ancestral temple sites with imperial palace characteristics excavated in China to date, marking a major breakthrough in China’s religious archaeology.

Shangqing Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Guixi City. It is the birthplace of the Zhengyi sect of Taoism. In 1958, Shangqing Commune was established; in 1960, it was renamed Shangqing Reclamation Farm; in 1968, Shangqing Commune was reinstated; and in 1984, Shangqing Town was re-established. Located in the southwestern part of the city, along the middle reaches of the Shangqing Stream, it is 31 kilometers from the urban area. The town covers an area of 87 square kilometers and has a population of 18,000. The Yingxia Railway and the Gong (Dian) Zi (Xi) Highway run through the area. It administers the Fuguan Neighborhood Committee and 10 village committees: Shangqing, Hanpu, Jianpu, Guizhou, Chengmen, Shawan, Lishan, Quanyuan, Niwan, and Tongqiao.
