The Jingguo Family Mansion Gate

The Jingguo Family Mansion Gate is located in the southern part of Shangchi Village. Constructed from brick, wood, and stone, it faces south and is a four-pillar, three-bay, three-story memorial archway, standing 7 meters tall and 3.2 meters deep,

8.4 meters wide. The stone plaque above the gate bears four raised regular script characters reading “Jingguo Family Mansion” in bold. This gate was built during the Song Dynasty but has suffered several fires over time. It was rebuilt for the fourth time in the first year of the Republic of China (1911), and a stone inscription prohibiting the storage of firewood and other flammable materials was erected. Opposite the gate lies a pond, and between the gate and the pond is an open area where numerous flagstone pillars stand—commemorating generations of scholars from the Shangchi Wang clan who passed imperial examinations or earned the title of Jinshi (advanced scholar). Many such flagstone pillars can still be found scattered throughout Shangchi Village today. Both the gate and the “Jingguo Family Mansion” stone plaque remain intact, making them of significant historical and cultural value for the study of Wang Anshi’s hometown.
