Tibet is one of the must-visit destinations for many outdoor enthusiasts. Before heading there, in addition to the necessary outdoor gear, there’s one thing you must prepare but often overlook — the Border Permit. Although Chinese citizens can freely enter and exit Tibet,due to the unique nature of the Tibetan region, many areas require not only an ID card but also a Border Permit to enter. Border checks can start more than 100 kilometers away from the border in many places, such as in Yadong, Zhangmu, and various parts of Ngari Prefecture, where a Border Permit is mandatory.
Places where a Border Permit is required:
1) Nyingchi Region
Mainling County: Mainling Township, Lilong Township, Wolong Township, Qianggang Township, Pai Township, Dan Township, and Nyima Yueba Duo.
Lang County: Jindong Township.
Zayü County: Upper Zayü Township, Lower Zayü Township, Zhugaggen Township, and Zayulang Township.
Motuo County: Motuo Township, Bêbang Township, Dexing Township, Gedang Township, and Damuloba Ethnic Township.
Eastwardyou can go to the Lhasa Public Security Bureau. With your ID card and an introduction letter, apply for another letter that allows you to get the Border Permit. Then head to the Armed Police Border Defense Corps. There is a small office right next to the main gate of the corps that specifically handles Border Permits. The fee is 8 yuan, plus a 30-yuan deposit, which can be refunded if you return within the specified time.
Tibet Border Permit Tips:
1. If you’re applying in Lhasa, it’s a good idea to bring several 1-inch photos — just in case.
2. The Border Permit is valid for 3 months. Pay attention to the timing; there’s no need to apply too early. Just apply once your departure date is confirmed and you’ll be fine.

Long for the purity of Tibet, but also abide by national regulations. If you plan to visit any of the above-mentioned areas, remember to obtain your Border Permit.
