The Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall is the largest historical figures-themed memorial museum in Jiangxi Province. It is located to the east of Ji’an County, the hometown of Wen Tianxiang, at the intersection of National Highway 105 and Jijing Highway. It is only 12 kilometers from Ji’an Railway Station on the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, and about 20 kilometers each from Jinggangshan Railway Station and Jinggangshan Airport, making it highly accessible.

The Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall covers an area of 8 hectares. Its main structure is a group of symmetrical, antique-style buildings along a central axis. Through six major sections, the memorial introduces the life and achievements of the national hero Wen Tianxiang in a comprehensive manner, utilizing five exhibition rooms and a 120-meter exhibition line that includes documents, cultural relics, charts, sculptures, stone inscriptions, and restored scenes.

The Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall is a set of Song Dynasty-style buildings, majestically situated atop a lush hill of pines and bamboos, facing the Changgan Highway, built in harmony with the terrain and featuring extraordinary grandeur. Passing through a tall and exquisite memorial archway, crossing the Jian’an Bridge, and ascending 47 stone steps leads you to the magnificent Wenxin Guogong Hall. This two-story pavilion features red pillars and yellow tiles, with upturned eaves and flying corners; the ground floor houses a central statue of Wen Tianxiang. The complex has a traditional courtyard structure, with a central garden surrounded by corridors connecting various structures such as the Wenshan Pavilion, Four Sages Shrine, Bamboo Dwelling, Number One Scholar Tower, and Poetry Stele Tower. The hall displays artifacts from Wen Tianxiang’s life, his personal belongings, manuscripts, writings, as well as calligraphy and paintings by contemporary notable figures. Wen Tianxiang’s tomb is located in Futian Township, Ji’an County, approximately 50 kilometers from Ji’an City. It was built in the 21st year of the Zhiyuan era during the Yuan Dynasty (1284). In 1982 and 1983, the government allocated funds twice for its restoration and the erection of a memorial stele.

Geographic Location

The Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall is located within Wenshan Park at the intersection of Changgan and Dunyong Highways, to the east of Ji’an County in Jiangxi Province. It is about 10 kilometers from Ji’an City and was established in 1984.

The Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall officially opened to visitors on January 9, 1992 (the 709th anniversary of Wen Tianxiang’s martyrdom). It is situated at the intersection of National Highway 105 and Jijing Highway, about 10 kilometers from Ji’an City, 12 kilometers from Ji’an Railway Station on the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, around 20 kilometers from both Jinggangshan Railway Station and Jinggangshan Airport, and 128 kilometers from the Gaotang entrance of the Gan-Guang Expressway. The location offers very convenient transportation.

The Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall is one of the first ten historical figures-themed memorial halls built in Jiangxi Province. In 1995, it was designated as a Jiangxi Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the Jiangxi Provincial Committee and the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province. In 1996, it was named one of China’s Hundred Patriotic Education Bases for Primary and Secondary Schools by six ministries including the National Education Commission, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Civil Affairs, Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, State Administration of Cultural Heritage, and the General Political Department of the PLA. It is also a premium cultural tourism site of Gan culture and a National A-level tourist attraction.

The memorial hall covers an area of over 120 mu, with a total building area of 2,200 m². Its main structure is a group of symmetrical, antique-style buildings. The Hall of Righteous Qi is grand and magnificent, with double eaves and upturned corners, connected via winding corridors to east and west wing rooms, side halls, and the Poetry Stele, forming a large courtyard. The courtyard features neatly arranged green trees, hedges, and lawns, complementing the yellow tiles, red walls, and stone railings of the buildings. The fragrance of flowers, the chirping of birds, and the soft sounds of ancient music create an exceptionally elegant environment. The memorial is divided into five exhibition halls and six sections, artistically showcasing Wen Tianxiang’s illustrious life journey through cultural relics, documents, photographs, images, paintings, charts, sculptures, stone inscriptions, and wax figures. Since opening, it has welcomed over 1.2 million visitors.

The entire structure is divided into the main building, the Hall of Righteous Qi, auxiliary buildings, and four exhibition halls, all built with brick-concrete structures in antique style. The Hall of Righteous Qi faces south with a northern exposure, featuring red walls, yellow tiles, upturned eaves, a caisson ceiling, latticed windows, carved beams and painted rafters, stacked brackets, and 99 stone steps leading to the entrance, all surrounded by evergreen pines and cypresses.

The Hall of Righteous Qi serves as the introductory hall, featuring a 6.4-meter-tall statue of Wen Tianxiang, solemn and majestic. The surrounding walls are inlaid with eight large murals depicting key achievements in Wen Tianxiang’s life. A model of the entire memorial hall is displayed in the introductory hall to guide visitors on their tour. The four exhibition halls are divided between the east and west sides; the west wing room is dedicated to a fine art collection and exhibitions on Wen Tianxiang’s life. The space is enclosed by surrounding pavilions and includes a central garden. Wen Tianxiang’s life is presented across six thematic sections: 1. Aspiring in Youth, Devoted to Serving the Nation; 2. Political Ups and Downs, Concerned for Country and People; 3. Raising Troops to Defend the Court, Rescuing the Nation in Crisis; 4. Years in Captivity, Singing with Heroic Passion; 5. Writing Poetry and Recording History, a Poetic Master of His Time; 6. A Timeless Model, Revered for All Generations. There are a total of 307 exhibits on display, including 4 sculptures, 103 pieces of calligraphy and paintings, 7 rubbings, 155 photos and charts, 38 documents and relics, plus a research literature archive room preserving scholarly materials and works by notable artists. The Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall officially opened on January 9, 1992, and receives an average of 55,000 visitors per year.

Wen Tianxiang, the top scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty, styled Songrui and also known as Wenshan, was born in 1236 into a landlord family in Futian Village, Chunhua Township, Luling (now southern Ji’an, Jiangxi). His father loved reading and placed great importance on his children’s education, hiring renowned teachers for instruction. Regardless of the season, Wen Tianxiang would study, write, and discuss history and philosophy with his younger brother in a study filled with moral maxims.

At the age of 18, Wen Tianxiang ranked first in the Luling local school examinations.
