Tomb of Wen Tianxiang

The Tomb of Wen Tianxiang is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Located on Tiger-shaped Mountain in Hukeng, Wuhu, Futian Township. The tomb was established in the 21st year of the Zhiyuan era (1284), renovated by imperial decree in the Hongzhi year of Wuxu (1488) during the Ming Dynasty, and rebuilt by order of the emperor in the ninth year of the Yongzheng era (1731) during the Qing Dynasty. In November 1983, it was restored with funding from the provincial and county governments. The tomb features a two-tiered red stone stairway with a total of 106 steps, and the burial mound stands 1.4 meters high. A new stone stele introducing Wen Tianxiang has been erected at the base of the tomb. In 1987, it was listed as a Provincial-level Cultural Relics Protection Unit and included in the "Chinese Scenic Spots Dictionary."

Wen Tianxiang, the top imperial scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty, styled himself Songrui and was also known as Wenshan. He was born in 1236 into a landlord family in Futian Village, Chunhua Township, Luling (now southern Ji’an, Jiangxi). His father loved reading and placed great emphasis on his children’s education, hiring renowned scholars to tutor them. Regardless of the season, Wen Tianxiang would study, write, and discuss history and philosophy with his younger brother in a study adorned with maxims and aphorisms.

At the age of 18, Wen Tianxiang ranked first in the Luling township school examination.
