The Ming and Qing Stone Archways in Ji’an County

The Ming and Qing Stone Archways in Ji’an County (including the Sun Family Chastity Archway, Xigao Archway, and Chibi Academic Achievement Archway) were designated as part of the sixth batch of Jiangxi Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units in March 2018.

The Chibi Academic Achievement Archway is located in Chibi Natural Village, Chibi Village, Antang Township. It is a merit archway, facing south and built with a southern exposure, featuring a wooden structure in a swallow’s nest design, and was constructed in the early to mid-Qing Dynasty. It has double-eaved brackets and hanging wooden plaques inscribed with the sunken characters “Academic Achievement Family.” The structure is supported by a total of 18 wooden pillars arranged in three rows and six columns; these pillars uphold the entire building. Out of the 18 wooden pillars, six are made of cypress, and beneath them lie six column bases made of Qiyang stone, all exquisitely carved.
