Former Site of the Gongnongbing Government of Suichuan County

The Former Site of the Gongnongbing Government of Suichuan County is a national AA-level tourist attraction, a cultural relics protection unit of Jiangxi Province, and a classic red tourism destination.

The Former Site of the Gongnongbing Government of Suichuan County is located on Mingbang Street in the county town (formerly Wanshou Palace). It is a Qing Dynasty–era building, featuring a temple-style structure with a blend of hard and hip roofs made of blue bricks and wood, with roof heights forming a trapezoidal shape and a three-sand floor. Facing south, the building is 17 meters wide and 55.2 meters deep, covering a land area of 1,352.9 square meters and a construction area of 1,613 square meters. The front of the site features three double-leaf wooden doors in a gatehouse style, with the main wall painted red and a tall, chestnut-colored central gate standing in the middle, flanked by two shorter side gates that are one meter lower. Inside, there are three courtyards and halls—front, middle, and rear—each connected by a patio, with opera stages and wing rooms built along both sides.

On January 24, 1928, after the establishment of the first red political power created by Mao Zedong—the Gongnongbing Government of Suichuan County—officials worked in the wing rooms on both sides. It is a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit and a national AA-level scenic spot. The Gongnongbing Government of Suichuan County was a red political power established under the leadership of Mao Zedong and stood as a banner in the Hunan-Jiangxi border region. Here, Mao presided over the drafting of the government’s “Provisional Political Program,” which fully reflected the principles and tasks of the democratic revolution under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, encapsulating the demands and aspirations of the people, and became the original blueprint for the construction of Soviet areas such as those in southern Jiangxi and western Fujian. In February 1928, Mao led the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army back to Jinggangshan, and the Gongnongbing Government of Suichuan County relocated to Huang’ao along with the army. After the Red Army withdrew from Jinggangshan, the former site of the Gongnongbing Government was burned down by Kuomintang reactionaries.

In 1968, Suichuan County restored the former site of the Gongnongbing Government to its original appearance. The entire structure is built of brick and wood, consisting of front, middle, and rear sections, with the whole building covering an area of more than 2,000 square meters. A “Former Site of the Gongnongbing Government of Suichuan County” exhibition hall was established here. In December 1987, it was listed as a provincial-level key revolutionary cultural relics protection unit. This site was the first red political power personally created by Mao Zedong in 1928 and also a model for the construction of red political power in the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base. In 2001, it was designated as a patriotic education base by the Jiangxi Provincial Committee and People’s Government, receiving 45,000 visitors annually. In 2006, it was announced by the State Council as a national-level cultural relics protection unit. It holds significant importance for conducting patriotic and revolutionary tradition education.
