Former Site of the Western Jiangxi County Committee of the CPC
The former site of the Western Jiangxi County Committee of the CPC is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.
The former site of the Western Jiangxi County Committee of the CPC is located at the Xu Family Ancestral Hall in Xijiang Town, Huichang County (southeast of Xijiang Market). It is a typical example of southern Jiangxi Hakka architectural style, situated to the south of the market town of Xijiang in Huichang, Jiangxi, between National Highway 323 and the Ganlong Railway. Originally built in the 21st year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1746), it features a brick-and-wood structure with a flush gable roof, facing west to east, with a depth of 28 meters and a width of 39 meters. It consists of one entry and two halls, with the main hall covering nearly 400 square meters.
In late July 1933, the Provisional County Committee of the CPC for Western Jiangxi was established. The committee’s office was located at the Xu Family Ancestral Hall in Xijiang Market, with Liang HuiChuan, Ma Demin, and Yang Zhichun serving successively as the County Committee Secretary. In October of the same year, the First Party Congress of Western Jiangxi County was held here. The Western Jiangxi County Committee was under the jurisdiction of the Guangdong–Jiangxi Provincial Committee and had working departments such as the Organization Department, Propaganda Department, and Women’s Department. It governed twelve district committees: Zhuangbu, Luokou, Chengshi, Nanmen, Xiaomi, Gaopo, Meikeng, Huang’an, Ch’e’e, Huanglong, Kuantian, and Shaxin. In the same month, to implement directives from higher authorities and arrange various tasks across the county, the Western Jiangxi County Committee convened a conference attended by cadres from the county, districts, and townships. Mao Zedong delivered an important speech at the conference. It is now listed in the municipal-level cultural relics protection register.
The Western Jiangxi County Committee of the CPC was established on the eve of the fifth “encirclement and suppression” campaign launched by the Kuomintang against the Central Soviet Area. The people of Xijiang, who had long suffered under feudal oppression and the reactionary rule of the Kuomintang, came to realize through years of practice in the land revolution that the only way to achieve liberation was to follow the Communist Party and establish and consolidate the red Soviet regime. Therefore, under the leadership of the Western Jiangxi County Committee, all aspects of work in Xijiang flourished. As Chairman Mao Zedong praised at the Second National Congress of Workers, Peasants, and Soldiers, “Places like Western Jiangxi in southern Jiangxi… where the comrades there have carried out progressive work, are equally worthy of our commendation.”
