Pan’an Wai

Pan’an Wai is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

Located in Zhen’gang Township, Anyuan County, Ganzhou City, about 20 kilometers from downtown Anyuan, it neighbors the national forest park Sanbai Mountain, the source of the Dongjiang River. The majority of the villagers are Hakka people. The old walled village gets its name from the enclosed residences (weiwu), with over 10 such structures of various sizes in the village, among which Dongsheng Wai, Zunsan Wai, and Pan’an Wai are the most famous.

Pan’an Wai and Zunsan Wai were built by two sons of Chen Langting. The former is situated beside the river dam, while the latter stands in the fields. The two weiwu, together with Dongsheng Wai, form a tripartite layout, independent yet facing each other from afar. These three weiwu have become locally renowned as the “earthen fortresses.”

The various weiwu in the old walled village “enclose” uniquely distinctive architecture and the villagers’ deep nostalgia for their homeland. With its unique cluster of weiwu, Hakka culture, and historical stories, the old walled village has been listed among the first batch of provincial-level historical and cultural villages.
