Xingguo Puhui Temple

Xingguo Puhui Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Puhui Temple is located southeast of Xingguo County in Jiangxi Province. It was first built in the second year of the Zhonghe era during the Tang Dynasty (822 AD), and experienced multiple periods of prosperity and decline over the years, enjoying great popularity during the Republican era. In the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947), Puhui Temple hosted a Yoga Esoteric and Exoteric Assembly, which was attended by over a hundred monks and nuns from both Xingguo and Yudu counties. The following year, Master Zongren held a ceremony at Puhui Temple to welcome sacred scriptures. Over three thousand Buddhists and pilgrims from Xingguo and Yudu counties slowly proceeded along the route from Puhui Temple to Yaogangnao, with shops on both sides of the street burning incense and holding candles, and the sound of firecrackers never ceasing. The county market also suspended meat sales for three days.

In 1956, with funding from Master Desen, Puhui Temple underwent renovation. Upon completion in September of the following year, Masters Falang and Zhenzhou jointly presided over the consecration ceremony and the opening of the Buddha statues’ spiritual light. Master Falang was from Dongkeng Village in Chenggang Township. Coming from a poor background, he began a vegetarian diet at age 13, became a monk at 15, and successively served as a monk at Dongzhen Temple in the county, Guangxiao Temple in Ganzhou, and Putuo Temple in Zhejiang. In 1938, he was invited to propagate Buddhist teachings at Nan Hua Temple in Shaoguan, Guangdong. In 1947, he went to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where he oversaw the construction of the Chinese Zhengjue Temple. In 1970, he left Cambodia, passed through Singapore, and returned to Hong Kong, where he presided over the construction of the Memorial Hall for Master Xuyun on Lotus Mountain in Kowloon. He later built a Guanyin Hall on Dawo Island and settled there. He had donated over 90,000 yuan in total for the restoration of Puhui Temple and Fazang Temple.

After the Cultural Revolution, the damaged temples were gradually restored, and normal religious activities were protected. By 1985, 18 Buddhist temples and nunneries had been restored in Xingguo County, with 35 monks and nuns. Master Rongfa was elected as a member of the 7th County Political Consultative Conference. On June 20, 1985, the preparatory group of the County Buddhist Association was established at Puhui, with Master Rongfa as the head. On April 1 of the following year, the first representative conference of the county’s Buddhist community was held, officially establishing the Xingguo County Buddhist Association.
