The China Science and Technology Museum is China’s only national-level comprehensive science and technology museum. It serves as a major science education infrastructure to implement the strategies of revitalizing the country through science and education and strengthening the nation through human resource development, aiming to improve the scientific literacy of the public. The first phase was completed and opened on September 22, 1988, the second phase on April 29, 2000, and the new building on September 16, 2009.

The main educational format of the China Science and Technology Museum is exhibition-based education. Through exhibitions that combine scientific, knowledge-based, and entertaining elements, along with interactive participation, it showcases scientific principles and technological applications. It encourages the public to explore and practice hands-on, not only popularizing scientific knowledge but also focusing on cultivating scientific thinking, methods, and spirit among visitors.

In addition to exhibition education, the China Science and Technology Museum also organizes various science outreach activities and training experiments, allowing visitors to deepen their understanding and appreciation of science through personal participation, thereby subtly enhancing their scientific literacy.

The new building of the China Science and Technology Museum, construction of which began on May 9, 2006, is located at No. 5 Beichen East Road, Chaoyang District. It borders the Asian Games residential area to the east, the Olympic water system to the west, the main Olympic Stadium to the south, and the Forest Park to the north. Covering an area of 48,000 square meters with a total floor space of 102,000 square meters, it is an important component of the central area of the Olympic Park embodying the three major concepts of the "Green Olympics, High-Tech Olympics, and People's Olympics."

The new building houses five major thematic exhibition halls: “Science Paradise,” “Splendors of China,” “Exploration and Discovery,” “Technology and Life,” and “Challenge and Future,” as well as a public exhibition space and four special-effect theaters: a dome theater, IMAX theater, motion theater, and 4D theater. The dome theater features both dome film screenings and astronomical shows. Additionally, the new building includes multiple laboratories, classrooms, science lecture halls, and multi-function rooms.

The architecture of the new building is a large single square structure, formed by interlocking several block-like volumes, giving the entire building the appearance of a giant “Luban Lock” or a “Rubik’s Cube,” symbolizing the ideas of “unlocking” and “exploring mysteries.”
